HELP: I can't find the POIs I just loaded on Nuvi 680

After much fighting with the POI loader on my mac (it never did work), I used my PC instead and was able to load both *.gpx and *.csv files onto my GPS. Now what? I don't see them anywhere even if I zoom in where they are supposed to be. Please help me...what am I doing wrong? If one of you kind souls can please help me out I'd be forever grateful. cevallos at gmail dot com

Did you upload icons with the files?

Not sure about the 680, but on the 760 they are listed under "Custom POI" in the "Where To Go" section.

Small gray icon

If you didn't upload an icon as cpjanda mentions, Garmin uses a small gray icon that is very easy to miss. At least that is what happens on the 760.

Instead of zooming in where you expect it to be, choose the POI from the list of Custom POIs and then choose "Show Map" -- it will show you exactly where it has it.

As for the Mac, did you use the beta version of POI Loader?

Did you load them onto the GPSr with POILoader? If so, did you load a .bmp file with the same name as the .csv file? I am not sure you can associate a .bmp with a .gpx file.

Same no-icon problem with Nuvi 680

I am having the same problem. I used the Garmin POI loader for the csv and bmp files for Starbucks. The POIs DID go in, and I used them to navigate to a nearby Starbucks. But alas, no icons anywhere. I zoomed in to the maximum and looked for several different locations. But they are not visible.

I'm wondering if this is a bug in the 680??

I Keep Suggesting, But . . .

What do you see if you pick one POI, and click Show Map? Is there no custom icon AND no grey circle (default icon) either?

POI icons

I see the icons in 2D mode. In 3d they don't show on my unit

The Should Show In 3D

With your 660, the icons should show in 3D as well.

"Missing" icons

Okay. When I use the menu: Where to?,Extras, Custom POIs,Starbucks, then select one and hit Map, it does show the icon on a 2D (only) view. BUT, isn't the whole point of the icons to have them display everywhere there is, in my example, a Starbucks so that you can see where they are as you drive along?

Maybe I just don't understand the point of the POIs?

Custom Icons

The purpose of the suggestion was to verify that the icon really is loaded properly AND that it is located where you expect it (and where you've been looking). Some units do require that you operate in 2D mode to see the icons of the Custom POIs, but, since my 660 doesn't require it, I would not have thought the 680 would require it either. Have you zoomed-in to the HIGHEST zoom level in 3D mode? It may not stay at that level as you travel.

As for the purpose of POIs, I don't think anybody would tell you that POIs are only useful if they can be displayed as a custom icon, or that they drive around looking at the screen to see what custom icons are in the vicinity and then decide what they want to do next. So, only you can decide whether custom icons are just a fun, unnecessary thing, or whether they really add anything to the experience. The one place I use them is for redlights/speed-cameras. They are sometimes set up in close proximity and a glance at the screen might show you that there are really two or three cameras very close to each other. I have alerts set for redlights, speed cameras, and rest areas. Other than that, I will know that I want to visit the nearest XYZ store and I'll go to the XYZ POI list to find the closest and have it route me there. I don't need an icon to assist me in finding it -- the distance to destination tell me how far it is.

Show in 3D for 260w

I gather that my 260w will not show POI cuctom or Garmin POIs in 3D mode, is this true? The garmin website is difficult to navigate for questions

.

Yes, this is correct.

Works fine on my 680

Custom icons display fine on my 680 in 3D mode at all zoom levels. Did you rename the bmp file to exactly the same file name as the csv file before loading them with POILoader? If not, they won't display.

Hi cevallos1974,

Since I'm reading this post almost a month after it was posted, if you haven't had any success using the Poi Loader for the Mac, make sure you are using the version 2.0.2.1 Beta. and are running Mac OS 10.4 or later.

You can find it here:
