How to set the Map View distance.

Okay, probably a silly question but I can't figure it out. I have a Garmin 260w and want to see the .bmp icons. Now, from what I read I need to have the map set to 200' view. How do I know if I am set at that view? Where is that info?

What is the default setting?

Not having a 260

I'm probably not the best person to answer your question:

If you will notice on you map screen, on the right side there is a + and on the left a -, if you click on the plus you will zoom in closer, the - will take you out. On some Garmins you have to be in 2d mode to see the icons, which may be found in tools, system, maps... At least that's where it is on my 760...

And there isn't a default setting

It is determined by speed, if you are about to make a turn, etc.... On mine if I'm not driving it seems to start with the last setting....

On my Nuvi 260, I see icons

On my Nuvi 260, I see icons when I'm zoomed in to the right height and in 2D mode, but quite frankly they are so small that I mostly can't tell what they are anyway. And I have yet to find any real reason for seeing them while driving. For one thing, I don't watch the screen while I'm moving other that just a glance now and then (like checking my speedometer) to check my status. Then if I actually want to find something nearby, I just do a search (when I'm stopped) in the pertinent POI category and scroll to find what I want.

I never have really figured out the reason why this question is asked so often, or why it seems to be so important to some users. Apparently Garmin realized that it was an essentially useless, and potentially dangerous feature, so they minimized it's visibility.

Tap on Map

Before Garmin removed the map scale that info was always available. Now you have to tap on the map screen to bring up another map with the scale. Unnecessary and another distraction. Garmin should give us back our map scale on the 2D screens.

Some units will display the scale, some like my c550 only display the zoom scale in 2D mode (I prefer 3D).

However, zoom all the way in (+) That should be 80' then back out (-) once and you are at 120' hit the - again and you're seeing 200' and once more will get you 300, then 500 then 800 etc.

So in your case, you say your unit must be at 200' or closer, zoom all the way in, (80') then back out two times (120', then 200'). My 550 will see the bmp's at 300' so I zoom in, then out 3 times. Not perfect, but it works.

Map Scale

From the Navigation Map screen, if you tap on the display (not on your vehicle icon) it will bring up another map screen that shows the scale. This is a way to tell what your zoom level is. Then press Back to return to the navigation screen. An inconvenient, but necissary step on the units like the 2x0, which no longer have the map scale on the navigation screen.

BTW, I don't think any units will display the scale in 3D mode. It would be meaningless.
