Garmin XT on Nokia N82 Black Edition POI Proximity Alert Problem

Hi,
I'm a newbie to this site, and have so far found it very informative and a useful guide.
I particularly found the information from 'Hornbyp' very useful in understanding the in's & out's of GPX/CSV stuff.
I am ok with computer use, and have used GPS for some 5 years, so the concept of GPS on my phone was welcomed when I bought the Nokia N82-Black last month.
I have now installed the Garmin XT software, and the (non navigable) map of Cambodia (where I'm stationed).
The map is a detailed version, with all the little backwater villages and tracks on it, and can be a Godsend when in the countryside.
The problem I'm having is getting the proximity alerts to function.
Please realise that, before posting, I have spent some 12 hours, loading & unloading via Garmin POI Loader, in different (.csv,.gpx) formats.
The unit does display the uploaded POI's as a silver dot, but there is no information (Name etc.) attached to the dot.
I also created my own 'target' BMP which displays nicely.
That is not too much of a problem, but what I need to do is to set up a proximity alert for that POI.
I have tried both 'express' & 'manual' modes, setting alert distances for each POI individually (lot of work!), and even entered the '@**' suffix to set speed alerts (15Km/h!) for every POI.
I have tried both default "bing-bing' tones, and even created my own 'trumpet' alert .mp3 (using case sensitive, identical file names of course), but I get precisely NO ALERTS at all, or any on screen info.
I'm using the 'old' ***.60 version of XT which is OK for day to day use, and have no other issues with navigation apart from proximity alerts.
It may seem to some people a minor problem, but you have to understand that in a country like this, a missed turn in the countryside can be very serious indeed (jungle/swamps/rivers/lakes etc), so any help in resolving this would be extremely welcome indeed.
Sorry for the 'long winded' post, but I need to show that I have tried everything I can find to get the prox. alerts to work, before resorting to asking for help from fellow users.
Again, many many thanks for the site, and keep up the good work.
Regards;
Paul in Phnom Penh
