Chit Chat Thread for the week of June 16th 2008

This is the place to talk about things that are not gps related, you can discuss whatever you would like, as long as it is clean. Remember we have families that have their children involved in the GPS fun and we don't want to make parents feel uncomfortable when their children ask what that word means.

Have fun...

This thread will be closed on Monday and a new one will be opened.

A dog story...

In Parkersburg, Iowa...the town that got seriously damaged by a tornado a couple weeks ago...there was an auto salvage guy who was picking up destroyed cars from the lot where they had gathered and placed them from about the town and in the back seat of one of the cars was a dog...so the salvage guy looks around in the car...finds the name of an insurance agent...the agent locates the car & dog's owner who had been looking for their companion since the storm. Wherever the dog ended up, he made his way back to town, found his master's car, and crawled in....dog & owner were happy to be reunited.

Graduations

Attended one last week (grammar school). Got another to attend this Saturday (college). Believe it or not, the college graduation is set to start earlier (at 8:30am -- poor graduates!) than the graduation for the grammar school which was at 12:30pm.

Nissan Rogue

Saw and ad today on TV for the Nissan Rogue (a new crossover SUV) and they said it had a Garmin Navigation system in it. Just got a glimpse of the inside and it looked like a dash mounted instead of a built in. At least someone is recognizing a good GPSr in the car business.

Say goodbye Lakers. 22 years is too long, but I'm glad to see Boston finally win one. They've been pretty mediocre for quite a while.

I figured they would win tonight, but I didn't expect the blowout I'm watching.

Not until we find a better way to make biofuels in the U.S.. Corn isn't the answer. Oil producers are going to continue making as much money as they can until there is a good alternate energy source. You can be certain that they don't want offshore drilling to drive oil prices lower. They just want something to pump at $200 per barrel when their current fields go dry.

Now if the Pat's had won, we could have had a trifecta! It still hurts to think about that one.

Hope you find your puppy very, very soon. Once you get him back, time for a harness. My Westies (hunting dogs like your beagle) like to wiggle out of collars, but they can't get loose from a harness.

My prayers are that you get your pup back soon, safe and sound.

Keep us posted.

Thanks for letting me vent. My beagle is home. One of the tow truck drivers I deal with at work found him about 5 miles from our house and called to him. Thought I was going to be stuck out West. Amtrak service has been suspended indefinitely between Denver and Chicago due to flooding in Iowa. I was able to book a flight [at considerable expense] from Denver to Detroit for Saturday, so I get to spend an extra day in the Mountain Time Zone. Travelling

Well, my c550 got me to Dubuque Iowa from L.A. Without a hitch. We had to detour around Cedar Rapids on the way in on Monday. Drove down to Cedar Rapids yesterday to pick up relatives at the airport. Took a detour thru town to video the aftermath of the flooding. Quite dramatic. Drove by a railroad bridge that collapsed into the Cedar River with freight cars on it! Quite a lot of ruined furniture piled up at the curbs. Who knew there were so many disaster mitigation companies? Hundreds of trucks.

the oil problem

Wait till the Chinese demand 90% of the worlds oil, thats just around the corner. The USA uses 30% now.

Then what? I have to ask the environmentalists. shock

However,
Oil prices could be driven down over the next few years and the reason can be summed up in one word:

IRAQ

With major western oil companies locked out of most countries with large reserves and OPEC therefore having a strangle hold on increasing production the U.S. has looked to Iraq to provide access to it oil and push down prices by ignoring OPEC quotas and ramping up production. Oil may not have been the only reason for the U.S. invasion, but it was certainly a big one. With up to 115 billion barrels of light sweet oil Iraq has the possibility to become the second largest producer of low cost, high quality oil in the world after Saudi Arabia.

For those interested:
http://tinyurl.com/3tpwsn

I'm going to hold out for the Fuel Cell, if Iraq exported bananas the war would have never happened, and the fuel cell would already be on the road. It's not like NASA didn't perfect them for space travel years ago.
