Routing Engine: Nuvi 200

I have now taken several trips using my Nuvi 200 and I can safely say waht I have said all this time. My nuvi 200 hates the interstate. It doesn't matter if the trip is inside a city or across the state, my unit just doesn't want to stay on the interstate, even when it knows the time is shorter.

My settings are shortest time and I did not tell it to avoid the highways.

ON an earlyer trip of 400 miles, 350 of which can be taken on the interstate, Garmin tells me to exit after 20 miles on the interstate and drive the rest of the distance on the backroads.

This past weekend I went ot a cross state trip of 200 miles and it was telling me to get off the interstate 40 miles earlier than I wanted to even though it admitted my route was faster (when I past the exit and it recalculated, it reduced the ETA by 15 minutes).

Or am I missing something. Does the "avoid Highways" option avoid the interstate system or does it avoid the US highway system, forcing the garmin to use the interstate as much as possible? I always thought "Highway" was referring to the interstate system.

On the bright side, I have seen more of the countryside than ever before.

You said your setting was

You said your setting was the shortest time. Are you should you didn't check the shortest distance? If you did try checking Faster Time.

route pref

The choices are Faster Time, Shorter Distance and Off Road. It should be Faster time.

Also, check if you have "toll roads" checked under "Avoidances". If there is a toll in your path it may currently be trying to get you around it.

Shortest vs Fastest

bluestring is probably right. Try to set your preference to fastest and the Nuvi will always make you get on the Interstates.

My wife had the same problem

My wife had the same problem a couple of days ago. Unfortunately, it was the first time she was using the nuvi. It goes without saying she now thinks it's a piece of crap.

She wanted to use it to go about 20 miles out to unfamiliar territory. So I saved the route for her the previous night. My mistake was that I did not scrutinize the route in detail, i.e. I did not preview and zoomed in to the route. Apparently it gave her roads running parallel to the interstate. She said she could actually see the interstate from where she was driving but the garmin was directing her to take the side roads.

I checked the Route Preference (set to Faster Time) and Avoidance (only clicked U-Turns, Traffic and Unpaved Roads). Re-did the route but no change. I gave up after a few minutes. Took the garmin for a ride the next day and noticed it was directing me to "Walk to blah-blah-blah...". What the...!!! The Usage Mode was set to Pedestrian!!! %#$&$#@(#@! No wonder.

.

My 200 loves highways. Sometimes I have to force it to take shortcuts I know are faster. You don't have to let it boss you around.

Does it not remind you?

I used my Nuvi 350 a couple times for geocaching and set it to pedestrian mode. The next time I turned it on, it prompted me "Do you want to continue using pedestrian mode?". Does yours not do this?

I noticed that pedestrian mode pays no attention to one-way streets and other things like "no left turn" intersections that a car would have to abide by but not a pedestrian. Not at all a good thing to be driving in pedestrian mode.

No prompt

My nuvi 760 did not prompt me like that. Does that prompt need to set up for it to come up at boot-up?

If it's set to either...

.... bicycle or pedestrian mode it will avoid interstate and other major highways. exclaim

There was no setting for this. Just another example of the different behavior between Garmin units. Suprisingly, some of the more upscale units lose some of the features or functionality of the lesser units.
