Update C530 or not?

A week or so ago, there was a brief discussion on this board about updates for the C530 & C550 available on Garmin's website.

At least one person reported updating their C530, which resulted in some routing errors. A C550 user reported similar issues with the new update. But that is where the discussion ended.

Has anybody else installed the latest C530 update (version 5.20, available as of 2/5/2007)? If so, is it worth the update, or does v5.20 screw up routing on the C530 so badly that it should be avoided?

Update c530

I updated mine and have not seen any problem. I just like to keep my equipment up to date with the latest version.

Me, too

I updated my c530, also, and have experienced no problems.

C530 UPDATE

NO PROBLEMS HERE WITH UPDATE

C530 Update

Just purchased a C530 in the past week and did the v5.20 update. Found it a little odd that the largest COSTCO in the world which opened last year and is just down the street doesn't appear. Neither does our Post Office which serves a city of 70,000+.

Maps not part of c530 update

The update for the c530 has to do with operation rather than the maps and POI's (locations). Garmin maps are released about once per year and cost $75 for the replacement. We are currently on v8. When you notice an error or omission, you can report it to Navteq, the source of the maps, at: http://mapreporter.navteq.com/dur-web-external/secured/submi...

Eventually, they will make their way into an updated version of the maps.

I've loaded the 2/5 update

I've loaded the 2/5 update with no issues identified so far.

It sounds like the update

It sounds like the update isn't as bad as I suspected.

In an earlier thread, a regular contributer to this board (ROBERT F. BREUNING) mentioned that the update screwed up a route that had been correct before the update. That post was followed by a C550 user who had a similar issue with the update. So there must be something to this.

I'm curious to hear from Robert in this thread, and whether he's seen other issues since the update.

not yet. only the one error

not yet. only the one error but it was gross it took be off the major hiway and on to a major street with a number of stopsigns. that is why i check to see if it had not reset itself to shortest from fastest. it had not

no routing problems

I haven't noticed any routing problems after the latest update on the 550. I have noticed the change to the traffic interface. I like the old way better, but think the new interface might be better in areas where I might be unfamiliar with the road #'s.
I have notice that the unit seems to want to route me away from traffic more so than prior to the update. It's like it's more aggressive in moving me away from traffic. Whether that has anything to do with the update or not I don't know.

5.20 update for the 530

After updating the 530 with 5.20 I haven't been able to get the location photo symbol on the map to show with the custom POI. This did work on the previous update. I contacted Garmin about this new glitch and the said they were not aware of it and would try to get to the problem.

Update

I did the update on my(1 day old) c530 from the Garmin site and it wiped out my maps...

This might be recoverable...

Are you getting messages such as "Can't unlock Maps" or "No detailed maps found that support routing - the Streetpilot cannot be used without them"?

If so, you need to create a file in the \Garmin directory called GMAPPROM.UNL, using notepad. This file should contain the 25digit map unlock code (without the dashes), from the Yellow slip that came with the unit.

This file is read 'once in a while' - one of the occasions is after a major firmware change (though it's normally a downgrade that triggers it).
