nüvi newbi questions

Guys,
I just bought the nüvi 760 and so far am loving it. I never thought I would want one (I have a really good sense of direction and have been reading maps since I was six) but having lived in a village outside London for the past few years, I have seen how cool they are! (It seems everyone has one flavor or another of GPS there.)
I have not quite sussed out a few things about the nüvi though and would love any guideance anyone can give me.
1) Is there a way to have it just show me where I am as I drive (without setting-in a destination) and still record the trip stats? I like to try different routes to places I know and see how they compare but cannot stand hearing her say "Recalculating" and then giving me intstructions (that I have no intention of following) every intersection I pass.
2) It sounds (from some of the threads I have read) like there is some kind of route planning that I should be able to do with my PC and then download into my nüvi. Is there special software I need to download somewhere? I got no discs with the unit but when I registered and updated the maps this weekend, I got something that will load state-by-state info. That has no way of planning a route, though.
3) The manual says to leave the nüvi on when I stop for a moment so that it will calculate the stopped time into the trip. Is there a way to make it stay on by default? Every time I eject it from the cradle or turn off the car it says that it will automatically turn itself off in thirty seconds. Also, what if I stop for the night and want to only count travel time in the calculations? If I turn it off when I get to the hotel and then back on again when I leave the next morning with the trip statistics record the trip info for both days as a single trip?
I know, I have lots of stupid newbie questions, but the documentation is sorely lacking.
Many thanks for any assitance or guideance to places were I can get assistance!

Answers to some questions
DJBergquist,
Question 1:
Yes all you have to do is turn on your Nuvi and select MAP. It will follow your driving. It will show the upcoming streets on the top banner. It will also record the trip in tracks. The tracks can be turned on for viewing at:
TOOLS >> Settings >> MAP >> TRIP LOG
Tracks can also be downloaded to your PC and viewed in MapSource and while in MapSource it can be viewed on Google Earth.
When just viewing your drive (Non-Route) You can touch the Speed icon and be sent to the Trip screen displaying avg speed, moving avg, max speed, Moving time total time, stopped time, Total distance traveled.
Question 2:
Yes there is some software available from Garmin free called MapSource which can be used to make routes on your PC and then upload them to you Nuvi. MapSource can also be used to make custom POIs and TourGuides. And allow you to download the tracks in the Nuvi.
Question 3:
No there isn't any way to have iy automatically stay on. Just tap theSTAY ON icon and it will. then you can turn it off at the switch later.
PS to Guestion 2:
PS call Garmin and say you want the 2009 Map version for Europe so you can build POI and routes for your Nuvi760- They should sent it free- they do in the USA. MapSource will be on the DVD the send.

Thanks for the info!
Hannah,
Thanks so much for the info... I tried your answer to question 1 on my way home. Way cool! Just what I was looking for. Thanx!
On Q2: So, I can call Garmin and get this software? Is that number on their website? Or did you find it in your package somewhere? I'm going out to their website to look for it.
I want to ask them for the US version since I am living back here now. (Wish I were still in London, but...)
On Q3: Bummer! How rude of them to say "this is the best way to do something" and then default the settings of the device to something else and not give you a way to change the default behaviour!
Oh well. Thanks again for all the info. I've got a lot to learn!

I think that if you have the Europe maps on your Nuvi you cannot get the NA maps. You could get mapsource free by downing Garmin's Training Center and then Downloading MapSource update.

Thanks for the input but...
Nope... I have the US Maps loaded. I bought it here in the US. Lakewood, Colorado at the Circuit City. (On sale!)
I did go to the website and downloaded MapSource, but now I have another issue...
After loading the software, I hooked-up the GPS to my PC, retrieved the routes that I had created in the GPS unit, and then edited the route... I could not find the actual address I was looking for in the machine and wanted to make the route exact.
After editing it, I renamed it, saved it, and downloaded it back into the machine. But I do not see them on the nuvi... what am I doing wrong?

You Have to "Import" the Routes
After you download the routes to your GPS, you have to then import them from this downloaded file. For my nuvi 780, here are the steps I follow:
- Touch "Tools" from main menu
- Touch "My Data" (may be on 2nd screen)
- Touch "Import Route from File"
- Then select the route you want; I can have a max of 10 loaded.
Hope this helps - steps should be similar on your unit.

Your routes
Does that mean you can now see your routes on your nuvi?
On my 780 nuvi, I can upload (from Mapsource) as many routes as my unit memory will allow. However, I can only import a maximum of 10 at any one time. If I am finished with a route, I can delete it and import another as long as I don't exceed 10.

Yes, I Can See My Routes
Thanks so much!
I can now see the routes I planned last night. When I did the import I was shown the list of the four routes I had worked on last night and was asked which I wanted to import. I selected one and it is there... when back and pulled all four in.
Thanks again!

Thank you Durango. I was having problems with this myself and this is exactly what I needed to know.
Some Other Info on Routes
JD & DJ - Following is some other route info that you might find useful:
THE TEMP.GPX FILE (on your Nuvi)
- All the Routes/Waypoints you upload to the Nuvi from any given MapSource transfer will be stored in the Temp.gpx file until the file is overwritten by a subsequent transfer from MapSource
- From MapSource, you can select/upload Routes and Waypoints or just the Routes, in which case the Nuvi will automatically load only those Waypoints used in the Routes. All Waypoints uploaded will become Favorites, so you may want to be careful and not clutter up your Nuvi with too many Favorites
- Remember that for the Routes to be used, they must then be imported on the Nuvi (max of 10) via “Tools, My Data, Import Route from File”
- If you delete an imported Route on the Nuvi, it will still be available for re-importing as long as the Temp.gpx file has not been overwritten by another MapSource transfer
- Now, if you don’t want the current Temp.gpx file to be overwritten by the next MapSource transfer because it has some data you may later want, you can rename it (e.g., Colorado.gpx). That way you can have many Route/Waypoint files in the Nuvi’s GPX folder, and all the Routes on these files will be available for import
- Although the Routes get erased if the current Temp.gpx file is overwritten by another MapSource transfer, as I understand it, the Favorites remain. So like I said earlier you need to be careful and not clutter the Nuvi up with too many Favorites (they can be erased)
THE CURRENT.GPX FILE (on your Nuvi)
- This file is re-created by the Nuvi every time you connect the Nuvi to the computer; it contains all the Favorites (from the Nuvi’s internal memory) plus a copy of all “active” Routes (imported or created) in the Nuvi.
- The Nuvi also saves a copy of this file in its internal (non user accessible) memory so Favorites or Routes can’t be accidently erased (to truly delete Favorites or Routes from the unit, you must use “Tools, My Data, Delete”)
- This file is essentially the Nuvi’s output file to MapSource, whereas the Temp.gpx file is the input file from MapSource
- Although I have never loaded custom POI's this way, I understand that you can copy the Current.gpx file to your computer (rename it) and use POI loader to load some of your favorite places into the Nuvi as a custom POI file and access them via the Extras area. This is a good way to keep different versions of favorite places readily available on the Nuvi, but not clutter up My Favorites
THE POSITION.GPX FILE (on your Nuvi)
- This is simply the current (or last) position that is automatically saved when you remove the Nuvi from the mount while the power is still on. This makes it easy to find your last position, such as your parked car, if you take the Nuvi with you.
.....This is probably more than you ever wanted to know about Nuvi routes and files, but I was bored - all reruns on TV tonight......
