The saga of my new 760

This post could have been included in any number of other posts, Costco prices, 2009 update, or prices dropping, etc., but I decided to start a new one.

What a revolting development this is. I ordered a nuvi 760 from Costco and it arrived via UPS yesterday.

They are really cutting corners to sell it at this price. An owner’s manual is not included and I went online to register it and found you don’t get the free 2009 update. (For $69.99 you can get a disk or download it, maybe that’s why Costco is selling the update for $54.99 plus $4.99 S&H).

Also I was able to try loading the 2009 update maps for my C550 onto a SD card and see if it would work in a compatible unit. The answer is no, I get a “can’t unlock maps” message.

I do like the 760 though. No carrying case was included but I discovered it fits snuggly into a case that came with a XM radio.

I have looked over the menus and haven’t discovered a way to turn off the satellites yet. (Well I know I can’t really turn off the satellites, they are to far away) There doesn’t seem to be a map browse feature. I’m sure someone will clue me in if there is a way. I know I will have other questions regarding the 760 before I’m done. That is why this site is so great, someone always has the answers. Come to think or it, I better download the owner’s manual...

Well I’ll call Garmin today with my tale of woe and see if I can’t weasel and update out of them… crying

News flash..

Update, Los Angeles, CA...

I just got off the phone with Dan at Garmin…He said I should be eligible for a free update. He doesn’t know why the site doesn’t allow me to download it. My choices were to pay $10 for S&H for a disk that would be shipped today or wait for 2 to 3 weeks for a download installation number to be generated by the software department.

I paid the $10…

He was also very helpful in answering my questions. The manual is located on the unit by going to help…

He also said that if you buy maps on a SD card, that they can be moved from unit to unit, but you will not be able to update it. You will have to pay full price for a new SD card, whereas if you buy the disk you will get a discount on future updates. He also said that if you purchased a map set on a disk, you could “probably” load it to a SD card instead of a unit and then move the card from unit to unit but it would be tied to that SD card then if it ran out of space you wouldn’t be able to update it… I didn’t like the word “probably”… shock

I'm not sure but if your unit calls for a 2 gig SD can't you get a 4 Gig, Just to make sure you won't run out of room and have plenty of room for your POI files ?
Just a thought.

I asked about a 8 gig card...

Dan said the unit would run slowly but I don't know it I buy it. I have a 4 card gig in the 760 with Europe maps and mp3s, about 1.75 gigs worth and I don't see any noticeable difference in performance. The 760 has about 2gigs of internal memory will it run out of room for updates??...

You can load all of the 2009 NT maps on a 2 gig card with plenty of room to spare...

Quoting from a post in this forum ...
On the 700 series, you can go to the tools menu and select Settings>System>gps simulator>on which turns off the gps.

Thanks Jakas

I knew someone would come through... I also have found that I can browse with the gps on which was why I originally wanted to turn the gps off...

Putting maps from disc on SD disc

I had a c330 and updated it but didn't have enough memory to put Canada on the gps so I snooped around on this site and someone had put on this site how to do that and it works on the c330 which isn't a extra drive like the nuvis. Look on this site it will tell you how to put the maps on a SD card.
