Nuvi 750 - Proximity Alerts

Help, I am new to this. I recently purchased a Nuvi 750 and I could find no place in the menus to turn alerts off or on. A Garmin tech advised me that the 750 will handle alerts and that the normal place this menu would be found is under "tools" "settings" and then the down arrow. Is is not there or anywhere else. He then said I would not find this menu until I had down-loaded some custom poi's.

I have down-loaded several, the combined rest areas for example, and have also tried Gary Hayman's exercise in creating a proximity alert for my home.

What am I missing? Or, what is my nuvi missing something? Will this model really do proximity alerts? Any advice whold be appreciated.

Proximity Points

I couldn't find it on my 750 either until I searched a little harder.
From Main screen select "tools" then "settings" Then scroll down.
It should be on left side of screen underneath "Language"
It should say " proximity Points"
At least that's were it is on my 750.

Where to turn on or off Proximity alerts

On my Nuvi750.

TOOLS >> SETTINGS >> PROXIMITY POINTS >> AUTO PLAY

Then you see:
AUTO PLAY
PROMPT
OFF

This screen will only be visible if you have CUSTOM POIs with ALERTS loaded.!!

So What is the Problem?

Have you looked under Where-To/Extras/Custom-POIs and found nothing there? Do you not see the icons? Do you not get the standard audio alert, custom audio alert? Did you SET alerts in manual mode of POI Loader? Is there a file named POI.gpi on either the unit or the card? Did POI Loader report that the loading was successful? We need a bit more info.

Nuvi 750 - Proximity Alerts

Thanks for responding. I do have categories of poi's in the "Extras" where they should be found. I do not see any icons or get the standard audio alerts or the custom alert I tried to set for my home. I did not set alerts in the manual mode of the poi loader. I used the automatic mode. The POI loader reported that the loading was successful. Where should the file named "POI.gpi" be found? I am not using a SD card but loading directly onto the unit. Is this a problem? Again, thanks for the assistance. Now that I know the unit is cabable of this feature, I will keep trying.

If the name of your file includes "Redlight" (as Gary Hayman's exercise suggests), you should get a proximity alert at 1/4 mile; if you did not include "Redlight", you would need to set an alert via manual mode of the POI Loader program.

To see the icons, you must zoom in very close and some models require that you operate in 2D mode.

Since POI Loader reported success, I'm sure you will find the file, POI.gpi, in the Garmin/POI folder on the unit. Loading of your POIs onto the unit or your card is equally OK.

Garmin 750 Proximity Alerts

OK. I did include "Redlight" in the file names as suggested in the exercise. And I did zoom in. However, this may be the clue to what I am doing wrong. In the Custon POI list on the unit, I do not see one entitled "Home" "My home" or any other derivation thereof among the othe POI file listed. Also, I do not see a file entitled "POI.gpi" in the Garmin/POI folder.

I am thinking I may have the csv file messed up, but you may have another thought.

Garmin 750 Proximity Alerts

Your response gives me hope. I know that I have Custom POIs loaded and I am still not getting the screen. I thought I had at least one with alerts loaded by recreating Gary Hayman's exercise. Do some/any of the POI files on the Factory site have alerts? How can I tell. I am assuming that if I looked at the file I would see a keyword like "Redlight" or an indication of distance? I hope some of my naive questions helps someone else.

Troubleshooting

For the purpose of troubleshooting, I recommend you load your single test file and see whether POI Loader says it was able to load. If yes, it will be the only file under Extras/Custom-POIs. You can then choose it and press See Map. Zoom in to see your icon. If you are using the exact same coordinates as your home, you may have trouble distinguishing the two separate icons; you might change the coordinates slightly, but remember it needs to be very near (I put them in) the roadway for it to alert.

I would doubt that any of the POIs on this sight other than the redlight or speed camera files are set to alert automatically, but I'm not certain.

Garmin 750 Proximity Alerts

I will try the trouble shooting idea. Right now I can zoom and see the custom icon. It is separate from the one for my home. I set the the coordinates for the custom POI to my driveway location, about 15 feet from the street. Should they be set closer to the street? I still have not gotten a menu to turn the alerts off/on. Is there possibly some way I have to activate/turn on the MP3 player? If I have my MP3 player search for MP3 files is comes up empty.

No

You don't have to activate your mp3 player for alerts to sound. And the mp3 player won't find the ones associated with the poi's.

If you have loaded the poi, icon, and mp3 files correctly (all with the same name and different extension), then the alert should work. Please verify that you have not added or saved the mp3 file with a second extension. This has been the culprit with many not working.

If you can see the icon, the file loaded. If you have the word "redlight" in the name it should alert. Fifteen feet from the street should probably be close enough, but I like to put them in the street. How are you testing it -- are you actually driving or running simulation mode? Remember, you must be on the road for the alert and be moving in the direction of the POI.

Got It - Finally. Nuvi 750 Proximity Alerts

Thanks to everyone who responded. I now have active proximinty alerts on my Nuvi 750. I set the coordinates for "My Home" to the street in front of my house (rather than my dirveway). However, I did not get the menu to turn the alerts on or off until I used the manual option on the POI loader. If anyone else encounters the problem of not being able to access the proximity alert on/off munu, the Manual option may be a possible solution, at least for the first download.

I've loaded custom POIs

I've loaded custom POIs using POI Loader (using Manual Loading and correct filenames) and do see:

Tools>Settings>Proximity Points

But in Proximity Points there is no 'Auto Play'. There is just a box that can be checked next to 'Custom Poi'.

Software version is 3.10 with 2009 Maps

TourGuides were the same way

Playing with TourGuides was the same thing. Until I actually downloaded a TourGuide file to my 760, there was no option in the menu to turn TourGuides on or off.

Nuvi 750 - Proximity Alerts

I have been following this subject since I'm having trouble with my 750 too. Gary Haymon says something should flash red for the alert. I have a message dropdown below the green bar. It says Alert, but the dropdown is grey. Is that the way it is supposed to be on the 750?

Thank you.
I downloaded the rest areas from MrKenFL and loaded them to my 750 manually. I get the grey dropdown alert as I approach the rest stop. but no audible alert. Is this normal for the 750?
I also tried to use the outhouse icon , but just have a grey dot as I pass the rest stop.

Rename Icon

Make sure the .bmp has the same name as the .csv or .gpx file and is located in the same subdirectory. When the alert drops down, you should here a generic ping. If you are loading a custom .mp3, it too must have the same name as the .csv or .gpx file and be located in the same subdirectory.

Hope this helps.

removed sound

I removed the sound I had installed for the restops. I also tried to install the outhouse icon again. I will drive buy the rest stop to see if I get the generic ping and post the results.

Proximity -grey Speed-red

Proximity alerts are on a GREY dropdown banner. Speed alerts such as exceeding 35MPH are on a RED dropdown banner

Don't be expending good petrol that way. Run the route in simulation mode.

I had to make the run anyway. It worked with both the sound I got from POI Factory and with the factory sound after I removed the poi sound. I thank you for the help.

Gray bar on 760

I get a gray bar on the 760, just as you said. If it is a speed alert and I'm going over the speed, the gray bar alert is replaced with a red bar. With my 350, there is just a red bar alert that replaces the green bar.

None of this works for me!

I can't get any of these hints/tips/tricks to work!!!!

I have a Nuvi 750 and have loaded POIs, icons and MP3 alerts using POI Loader for Mac (version 2.0.1) and the POIs show up under Extras.

However, I have no option to set up proximity alerts under any of the places mentioned in this thread. It's quite frustrating.

Any tips?

On my 680 I manually load

On my 680 I manually load the POIs and set the alerts then. I don't think you can do it after you load it. Also, be careful setting all of them to alert you-- It would be confusing as you drive.

use POI Loader Version 2.0.2.1 Beta to load both "Manual" and Express on the Mac.

Do a search on this site for the beta version - or google it !

No Custom Alert on 750

I have downloaded the Redlight and Speed files using POILoader and can see them in the Garmin 750 under Where-To/Extras/Custom-POI When I downloaded the Redlight and Speed files I also had two MP3 files in the same folder with the exact same Redlight and Speed file names and my PC added the mp3 extension. I tested this by emailing them to myself and saw that the file names were correct with the right extensions. I have downloaded all 4 of these files using the manual and express modes and POILoader always says you have successfully loaded 3340 POIs.. In addition I have set the Proximity alert to CUSTOM POIs and the Tour guide to Auto Play for manual and express loads and get a gray drop down bar but NO AUDIO. I then set the Tour guide to PROMPT and perform both manual and express loads, testing after each download and still get a gray drop down bar but NO AUDIO. Then I set Tour guide to OFF and perform both manual and express loads, testing after each download and still get a gray drop down bar but NO AUDIO. I have tried this same process with all 3 different alerts that I downloaded from this site and the 750 always displays a gray bar but there is never an audio alert. And yes, the volumes are up on all three of the volume setting modes. What am I doing wrong?

Try

Try just copying the mp3 file to your nuvi, and playing it through your player. If it plays, then you know that it is not a mp3 file problem.

You need to have the icon, mp3 and csv files in the same folder on your computer when you load them to your unit. So it should look like this:

POI FOLDER (What you point poi loader to)
Rest Areas (Folder)
Rest Area.csv
Rest Area.bmp
Rest Area.mp3

Let me know if this helps any.

?

phxhiker,
Have you taken the necessary steps to make sure your computer is not hiding extensions for known file types (3 out of 4 times this seems to be the problem -- double extensions)? Why are you referencing TourGuide settings; neither of these files should be TourGuides. What are the names of the files you are loading? Are you running simulated routes past the location to test? Are you getting the default audio alerts (bongs)?

NUVI 750 Proximity Alerts

I called Garmin and was on hold for 35 minutes and they said I was doing everything correctly and they could not help me since it is a third party application. Then I received your reply and connected the 750 to my PC and downloaded the MP3 alert files as you suggested. I could not hear them hear them play so I checked all of the 750 audio menu options and found that the unit had been set to broadcast to FM radio channel 88.7 and the 750 does not have an FM Transmitter. Once unselected the FM transmitter mode and picked the correct mode, I ran a GPS simulation and the alert worked fine. Now to try and get a couple of jpeg ICONs converted to bmp so I can include them in the same folder. I am very happy the sound now works. Thanks for your suggestion!

You are welcome

It is the simple things that often give us the biggest headaches.

As others have said, your unit does have a transmitter. It doesn't have bluetooth.
