nuvi newbie and POIs

I just purchased and set up my first GPS, the nuvi 750. After downloading the new maps (and presumably, POI) I tried it out on my own home address. What I'm finding is the Garmin POI information is outdated to the point of being scary if I were to use it in a strange town. Some if the locations it shows are more than five years out of date so far as stores being now non-existant. In other cases it does not list a chain convenience store five minutes from my house to send me across town to another, newer location 30 minutes away. One reason I hesitated to buy a GPS is my experience riding with colleagues who would drive 20 minutes to a restaurant location to find an empty lot or abandoned building. I also thought there was a charge for the GPS service (i.e. satellite radio). Finding there was none was a motivator to buy a unit. Now, do I find I DO have to pay for service in the form of aftermarket POI downloads to update the unrealiable Garmin information? Any feedback from experienced owners?

You don't have to pay here..

The poi's here are made by members and usually up-to-date. But you are correct you can't just trust the devices info.

Free

As long as your signed up on poi-factory(which you are because your posting on the forums) you can download all the poi's here free of charge! In order to download speed alerts and red light cameras, however, you must pay a subscription or be an active member.

You're Not Alone

If you read some of the topics on the POI Factory, you'll find you are not alone. Many owners complain about how out-dated the built-in POIs are and, how large the lag time is for the maps to catch up to current conditions - sometimes 2, 3 or more years to get roads updated through Navteq, the map supplier.

That's what makes this site so exciting. Users who live in these areas, know the local terrain and contribute to create accurate, timely POI files.

Welcome to the POI Factory!

I also have the 750, originally with the 2008 maps, then updated to the 2009 City Navigator. I assume yours now has the 2009 map and POIs. Yes?

GPS units are not perfect and never will be. Don't let it steer you into a lake. Also accept that some businesses (or a no-longer-a-business) will have outdated info. In general, it makes no or little sense to use the GPS in a city well-known to you to take you to a built-in POI when you will know the current city stats much better than your GPS will. When in a city completely foreign to you, the GPS will generally take you to the closest POI of interest--and when it directs you to not necessarily the closest POI, it will still get you to one that will meet your needs. If going to a restaurant or some other place, it never hurts to use your cell phone and call the business to ensure that it's still open.

GPS units don't have subscription fees except for those units with optional Traffic Info and those with internet connectivity. You do have the option of buying annual updates for City Navigator which will include updated maps and updated POIs. For me, having spent nearly $400 for a GPS, I'm willing to pay $60 for annual updates. Others update their maps every 2-3 years. Yet others find that they buy a newer better GPS before they need a map update. To each their own.

Regarding POIs, remember that you're now at a wonderful web site that offers a gazillion free POI add-ons. Only the red light and speed cameras have a potential fee to use. Wander around this site and look into trying some of the POI-Factory data sets.

Welcome to vehicle GPS!

On the point of updates.. Here I go wondering again

I found that since I received my first GPS in 1999 or 2000 the street I live on was shown to go thru to another street. Well the street does go through to that street if you want to walk up some stairs but you sure wouldn't be able to drive that way. It was that way on version 4.01 of City Navigator and the version I had prior to that.

It was still that way on the version 8 of City Navigator.

I was just wondering if I placed my position next to the stairs and told the gps I wanted to go to the top of the stairs what it would do. (I really should get a life) I thought possibly the gps might tell pedestrians to go one way and cars another.

Guess what after 8 years the 2009 update no longer shows the street going through I reported the issue about 6 years ago and now it has finally changed. Now I wonder what it will tell a pedestrian to do. I’m never satisfied. My unit doesn’t have a pedestrian mode so I can’t check it..

Maps

My daughter's house still doesn't exist on the newest maps. Her entire subdivision doesn't exist and it's been there for a number of years. However, they finally made a change near my house. The maps have always told me to take the freeway on-ramp at 5th Avenue but there has NEVER been a ramp there. The 2009 update fixed that. It's a small victory but a victory nonetheless. smile

Kevin, the "Getting Started" and "FAQ" links are directions to tutorials on how to get started using POI's. Too many people, I fear, think they are for help in navigating this site.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.
