eTrex Vista HCx

Took advantage of the recent REI sale and bought an eTrex Vista HCx

A few things to mention:

The satellite reception is amazing. I get a lock very fast, indoors and in rooms not even close to a window. Amazing!

Routing: I have an old Mapsource City Navigator v.5 cd from my old eTrex Vista. Purchased MetroGold for $6, which made it route-able and now I have auto-route capabilities on it without having to purchase another unlock key for City Navigator.

Geocaching: Went over to geocaching.com and found a cache directly across the street from my house!

Anyway, it is fun...

Love my Etrex

My Etrex was my first Garmin and I still use it along with my 660 some times. But off road there is no substitute. Geocaching is a great hobby too...and a great way to get out and hike....

Vista HCx

Yes it is fantastic for caching, I have 750 caches loaded for my area, I also have Southern Ontario Topo loaded ($175.)1:10,000 scale. Some of the other features are overkill for me but I love it.

indeed!

i've got mine filled up with most of the western US states @ 24k, and some obscene number of POI like 300,000. startup, well, startup is slow, as it slogs through the mess, but i'm pleased that it can deal with all that data and resolution while scrolling around.

isn't the reception amazing? i too get reception indoors and not even near windows. something fun too is turning on the barometric altimeter feature and watching it update as one goes up and down stairs or an elevator -- completely enclosed with no line of sight at all.
