What, exactly, can I expect of a bmp file that in loaded into my Garmin (model 780) I expected that the bmp image would appear in the screen. If not then what does it do?

When it is loaded with a poi, you will see that bmp image instead of the common black square dot. This is useful when you want to see a quick glance and know what it is.

Looks like this
The bmp icon shows up like this. In this mode, it's a route to my bank. When your driving pass a custom loaded POI with it's own bmp icon, it'll show up on the map as you drive. Just imagine the icon without the checkered flag sticking on it.

I know I've been out for awhile, but couldn't resist asking...What exactly does a square dot look like?
LoL, good to see some things haven't changed..
(from dictionary.com)
There are no dictionary entries for square dot, but square, dot are spelled correctly.
1. Square - a rectangle having all four sides of equal length.
1. Dot - a small, roundish mark made with or as if with a pen.
