Can you delete voices?

Seeing the question about adding too many POI's (not having enough room), it made me wonder is there a way to delete the unused voices I downloaded?

Delete Voices
If you reset your GPS (hold down on extreme right hand corner of the screen when starting GPS, you will reset all data back to the factory settings

Deleting Voices
On my Nuvi 360 and 660, along with my StreetPilot 550C, I deleted all unused voices by connecting the units as extra hard drives via a usb cable and simply placing the unwanted voice files into the trash. It worked just fine this way.

Are there options to download other voices?

Copy GPS Contents to Computer's Hard Drive
When rkf mentioned about using the computer to delete voices, I thought maybe users would like to know you can copy the entire nuvi350 GPS contents to the computer hard drive. I did that so I can delete the unused/un-needed files and still have a backup, if needed.

downloading voices
I have a StreetPilot C550 and when I use the Garmin Webupdater, it lets me update, and install new voices. I am able to pick which ones I want. I only update the English, because I will never use the other languages.
deleting voices
I don't have mine in the house right now (it is in the car) and I can't recall, is there a folder for voices? If not how did you find them?
Deborah
yes
there is a folder containing all the voices. since you have a c550 you also have a folder containing all of your vehicles too. as well as the sample mp3s and splash screen.
When you have the gps hooked up to the pc, from my computer, right click on it then click explore then you can explore the folders.
I like retiredtech's idea, move the files you don't want to a folder in your computer then it will be available should you want it at a later date.

Saving Space
Do you also have a bunch of help files in different languages you can back up and remove? This saves about 2.5 meg on a 660.
660, v3.80
Back Up
On the back up, did you simply drag and drop or is there a back-up command on your computer or GPS unit?
Thanks.

Copying the Garmin files
Just opened up Windows Explorer and dragged them over to a folder on the hard drive. I then burned this to a DVD so I have a hard copy. I did this before I updated the GPS and after.

Before deleting...
I have a quick question -- on the Garmin 670, if I get the travel guide packs, are these voices used for the language translation feature?
~John Garmin Nuvi 670
Yes
Since I removed the voices the translation feature no longer translates, it just reads the sentence in English.
660, v3.80
But from reading other posts
But from reading other posts on another site, I don't think it is a complete backup. Some internal files are hidden and write-protected and cannot be copied.
That is my understanding from what I read..

I am not sure about the voice for directions but you can make other voices for alerts for your custom POI.

Officer I'm sorry I was going the wrong way on that one-way street but my GPS told me to turn left ... Oh, I'm still getting a ticket, okay then the GPS will see ya in court!
Backup
You can use the same technique (copying from the Nuvi to hard disk) to back up a SD card, for example a Euro NT file. Good idea to do this in case something happens to your SD card.
I wish I could add some
I wish I could add some different voices to my Nuvi 350.
I belive you are correct.
I was wondering about that, I went to look into that with some of my utilsites and found that there is hidden files there. I cant see them (yet) but I belive that is the operating system and bootup procedures. One has to look at this as a Computer which is is in a way..
You can back up the main files but not the operating system and service packs (if thats what you want to call them)
Has anyone tried to back oput of a system upgrade after using the webupgrade program?
I am to new to this yet but am willing to try..
Soon I will be tring to hack this gps but I need to learn more about it.
As anyoune out here tried to hack it and have what was the out come of it.
Again I dont mean to hack it in a bad way but to override some of the restrictions that garmin puts in placew
( and all of them do - look at all the cell phones out there)

You can go to windows explorer (my computer) / tools / folder options... view and pick show hidden files, then copy and paste the files in the garmin folder to your hard drive. (takes about 40 min)
Everyone should do this...and yes people have recovered from faulty system upgrades (most as a result of using the web updater) by then restoring from their backup. A manual upgrade for SW is recommended.
Files that must be backed up for a restore to work.
At least for the nuvi..

gmapprom.sum
gmapprom.unl (if you have installed/updated maps)
Much discussion and info on this at the gpspassion.com website.
As far as hacking into one, I haven't seen that anyone was succesfull at this...yet

other voices for alerts for your custom POI.
How do you go about using different voices for different POI? There are times I can't see the screen because of sunlight and I came upon a red light camera and didn't know what I was approaching. Will any wave file work?
Thanks
You have to convert .wav to
You have to convert .wav to a .mp3 file first and the name has to be identical to the POI file except for the extension and when you load it manually you can tell it to alert you at specific distance.

redlight mp3 files
Doyou know where to get some redlight camera mp3 files?
Copy GPS Contents
Just got my Nuvi 370 and am copying all files to my computer for backup. Not sure if they will be useful in case of future GPS crash, but it's better to have them just in case than to wish I had taken the time to back them up. The whole process took about 1 hour to copy the files to my computer.
Go to this link and you then
Go to this link and you then can create any voice you want for any of your .mp3 files..

Help files
Since I do not use travel pack, I deleted all the voice files and saved myself 250M which gives me enough space for millions and millions of custom POI (I do not want to put custom POI in SD card for performance)
And if I need translation in future, all what I need to do is to restore them!
Now I need to delete all the help files, keeping the English help only
Has anyone tried that?

Custom Voices
I'd love to have the ability to replace the default voices with mine (or the wife's) ... can you imagine the fun with "Recalculating, because you weren't paying attention" ... or the like
Anybody make any headway on this yet?
Re: Can You Delete Voices?...
Hi DJKM,
I removed 34 unused voices to a tune of 231.6 MB from my Nüvi 670, after copying them first, to a folder on my hard drive. If I decide to travel to, let's say Europe, i'll just add the appropriate voice(s) back on to my Nüvi.

You haven't filled in your profile, so we don't know what unit you have. Assuming it is a Text-To-Speech model, it is a bit more difficult, evidently, than changing the non-TTS voices. But it can be done.
There are lots of threads on this if you search, but check out:

As a much easier alternative method of surprising your wife, why not create a POI for your home and add an mp3 alert that says, "You are home, and now would be an Ideal time to show your husband just how much you love him." Instead of recording it yourself, go to one of the web sites that convert text to a voice file. I snuck one onto a friends unit where a woman's voice said, "Hey dumb___ you are approaching a redlight camera." But before he had a chance to hear it, though, his on/off switch failed and he took it back to the dealer. Hope they wipe the drive before reselling it as a refurb.
Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.
Re: Voices...
Hi bentbiker,
I would have loved to see the look on his face, if he'd heard that "special" alert. I'm sure it would have been..."priceless".

If you don't like them now and don't use them, why would you use them if you went to Europe, just wondering.

I thought I used Kristen, but that must have been something else. Guess it was Crystal. You will have to convert from wav to mp3. I use iTunes for that.

folders on the Garmin
I have a Garmin nuvi 350. When I connect my nuvi to my host and run the Garmin WebUpdater software, after checking for any firmware updates, it gives me a list of all available car icons and voices. Then I just checkmark the ones I want.
And while cleaning up has been discussed, I don't see any actual folder information. FWIW, my vehicle icons are in "\Garmin\vehicle", and the voices are in "\Garmin\Voice". After getting rid of the icons, voices and help files I don't and won't ever use, the unit feels like it starts up faster!

Wow, I asked this so long ago, I forgot I asked it. I have a memory card now for all the POI's, so it does not really seem as important. But, I still appreciate the answers everyone gave me.
