MyGarmin now says I have a free 2009 map update for my Nuvi660

Just just went into MyGarmin and I have a free 2009 update now available for my Nuvi660. Its almost 2GB and I'm downloading it now. Being a old Magellan fan, I gotta say I love Garmin's support.

How long ago?

How long ago did you buy/register the unit?

I bought my Nuvi660 second

I bought my Nuvi660 second hand at the end of March. This unit was a warranty replacement for a unit that the original owner had bought in Feb 2008. He had registered this warranty replacment Nuvi on March 8th.

Ironically I had emailed

Ironically I had emailed them last week asking about my chances of receiving a free update and I was responded within 2 days. The response was that I would not get a free update and they provided me a link where to purchase to update. This week I check MyGarmin and I get a message saying I got a free update.

They changed their free update policy

Initially the nuvi 660 was not qualified for a free 2009 update but Garmin changed the policy under the pressure from uhappy customers. They had the lame excuse that the 6xx is aproaching (how the hell I would know that?) the end-of-life product and as such it is not qualified for a free update. Around May 5th I think, they changed it and if you bough your nuvi in the last month or so you'll get the update. Unfortunaly for me, there are not that many nuvi 670 owners to press on Garmin, so I had to pay for my nuvi 670 update (purchased on April 15th and registered on the 19th). After I requested to discuss the issue with a supervisor, at least I was able to get 50% discount on the update for 670.
I wasnt able to find anywhere on their web site a clear statement about the update eligibility! Why 660 will get the update and 670 which is a more expensive unit will not? what's the logic behind it?

update

A couple weeks ago there was nothing on the mygarmin site indicating an update for my 650. A couple days ago, the site should one available. I downloaded the update and it's now installed on my GPS. Everything installed ok and is working fine.

I have a 680 that was

I have a 680 that was purchased 2/27 and called Garmin customer service and was told that my unit is end of life and therefore would not qualify for a free upgrade. I thanked him for informing me that I had an end of life product and said that being that I purchased the unit from Costco and I didn't want to have a "new" "end of life" product that I would return it under the premise that my unit is end of life, as stated by Garmin. In response the rep very promptly offered to send the update to me. I received it 3 days ago and am now running it.

I'm happy about the free update but really don't like knowing that my new unit is at it's end of life as I equate end of life with end of support.
