Nuvi 650 firmware

I see on Garmin's site that a ton of 6xx series NUVIs all have firmware updates as of May 5th with the exception of the 650 which isn't even listed.

Does anyone have any insight into this? I thought 650 and 660 were similar from a firmware perspective.

thx,

Most are the same file

I have seen this happen before. The firmware will be labeled with a 6XX designation. If it is, then it will work on the 650. The best approach is to use the Garmin WebUpdater and let it see if there is an available firmware update. If you want to get the file yourself, just download one for one of the other 6xx models and see if it has the 6xx designation. If the update is for traffic info it may not be needed unless you use an add-on traffic receiver.

I just used the WebUpdater and the 4.40 firmware was identified as available and was installed without problem. There was a brief period where the screen went black during the reboot but it came back on by itself.

Is The Mp3 Skipping Problem Fixed?

I'd be interested to know if the mp3 skipping problem has been fixed. The one where when a POI mp3 sound file is played while music mp3s are playing?!? See: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/10640

The update is new, but has anyone had a chance to test it? The release notes don't always tell you everything they changed.

The Web Updater said it had

The Web Updater said it had new brains for my 660, and downloaded it. That first startup took a while, but now my 660 says it has software version 4.40 with audio version 1.50, gps software version 3.00, and bluetooth software 3.10.

cheers--

Hi Gary A,

I have a Nüvi 670 and after installing the v4.40 update, i simulated a route and, unfortunately, the .mp3 skipping problem still exists.

Until Garmin fixes this problem I've removed all my .mp3 alert files and, for the time being, just get the Garmin's generic "ding" as my alert sound.

Dang "Ding"

Thanks Tailspin. This is probably not a high priority problem for Garmin to fix. Now that the 660 is near the end of its lifecycle (what about your 670?), I'm wondering if they will ever bother to fix it?!?

I'm getting ready for a road trip and I guess I'll just take out the rest area mp3 file. The skipping ahead of music is real annoying to me.

Hi Gary A,

I'm wondering if this "issue" only affects the Nüvi 6XX series.

If the 6XX series are nearing the end of their cycle, then it would make sense, as to why there hasn't been a stampede, to "fix" the problem.

I can only hope I'm wrong...

The skipping is really annoying to me as well. Does yours only skip when an audio alerts comes on or it's does it all the time with or w/out any audio alert. Mine does it when there's an audio alert. I have the 650.

Mp3 Problem With Mp3 Audio Alerts

I happens only when you are playing mp3 music or podcasts or audio books and you have mp3 audio alert files loaded with your POI files.

As you are listening to the mp3 player and approach a POI that has a mp3 audio alert file loaded, the GPS stops the mp3 player (music, book, etc) and plays the audio alert file. When it tries to go back and pick up the mp3 music, book, etc, where it left off, a firmware bug causes the mp3 player to skip ahead to the next track. It happens every time an audio alert file is played while listening to music, books, etc.

As Tailspin described, if you don't load any audio alert files, then the unit plays a default "ding" sound, which is not an mp3 file, and then the mp3 player will resume playing correctly.

The most common work-around seems to be to NOT load any audio alert files when you run POI Loader or don't listen to mp3 music, books, etc. Personally, the mp3 player is one of the main reasons I bought the 660. An SD card is a lot smaller and holds more than all the CDs I used to lug around.

Scanning the previous topics, the affected units specifically mentioned by owners as having this problem are the 310, 350, 360, 650, 660 & 670.

I don't understand....

I'm sorry but I don't understand. What do you mean that the 660 is nearing the end of it's lifecycle? Does that mean they won't support it or something or does it just mean that there are so many new models it's outdated? Or is it being discontinued or what?

I bought my 660 in the fall of 2006 and love it. I wish it had a few features like route planning but it otherwise works great. Even the hubby likes it. He can't read maps for beans but still argues that I'm going the wrong way when I'm not!! LOL The GPS is great at proving I was right!! HAHAHAHA razz laugh out loud grin

lifecycle

i agree the 660 is a great product, but the lifecycle statement just refers to newer models replacing the older modle and improvemnts come out like routing. the 760 and such will replace the production of the 660. it only means that Garmin is not manufacturing the model, does not mean they are not supporting the model.

Thanks for the update

Thanks for the update information on the 650. I had been wondering this question myself.
