SD vs SDHC?

Does anybody know if the SDHC cards work on the Nuvi 7xx? I can't find anything that indicates that they do support those cards, and I would think that if they do, they would advertise it that way.

Also, after seeing that post on the boot time using a 2GB card vs. the 4GB card, I suspect it is that lack of support that is extending the boot time.

I have no direct experience with them, but when I was looking for reports a while ago, I read that several folks had no problems with the 4GB SDHC cards in their nuvi 7xx GPS.

Note that many PCs with SD media readers may have problems with the cards since their built-in media readers are SD-only, but this can be easily fixed by buying a USB SDHC media reader for $5-10.

Garmin does report that some cards (Ultra II or something like that...?) do not work in their devices.

since so many people have SD

since so many people have SD card readers that are not compatible with SDHC cards, many come with a SDHC reader included. Costco has a 4GB SDHC card with reader included.

4GB SDHC In My Nuvi 660

I have a SanDisk 4GB SDHC card in my 660. I do not have a separate reader, the nuvi reads/writes just fine to the SDHC card when connected via USB to my PC as a mass storage device.

While this is just my opinion, it seems to me that the longer boot time with a 4GB SDHC card has more to do with how much data has been written to it, rather than just it being 4GB capacity. Part of the boot process is the nuvi going out and reading what is on the SDHC card. The greater the number of files, the more time it takes to read through the files.

I put my mp3 music files on my SDHC card. As I was deciding which files I wanted to copy to it, I would sometimes stop and boot the nuvi. At first, there was no noticeable difference in boot time. By the time I was done, it did seem to take a little longer, but not so bad that it bothered me. I have my SDHC card about 1/4 full. Maybe if it was nearly full, the boot time would be more noticeable.

Awesome SDHC Card

One of the better SDHC card that is compatible with almost the entire nuvi line is the Kingston 4GB SDHC card. Buy.com has a very good deal on this card ($18.95 with free shipping)

Hi purpleblue,

Have you got a link for the card & reader. I looked on Costco.com and couldn't find that combination.

although this is more expensive than what I see in the actual Costco store.

SDHC Card

I have a 4gb sdhc card in the nuvi 760. Works fine. Garmin nuvi was the ONLY thing I owned that would read the card! Not my printer slot nor my multiple card reader. Later I purchased a open type thumb drive from Office Depot for 5.99. If necessary I simple pop in in the thumb type case and naturally the USB ports in my PC can read it now.

for c330

Can anyone tell me if a 4GB sdhc works for a C330? Thanks.

Update

In the event you try it and it does not work (as advertised) you may want to make certain you have the most recent updated firmware. I have a Zumo 550 that advertised it would work with HD cards, but did not until the firmware was updated. If you only have a map file it will be fine, but if loaded with lots of small files (MP3, pictures etc) be prepared for a five minute start time. Garmin recomends 2G if you want a fast start up with lots of storage.

Garmin should really give some information about this. First, I concluded that the 770 didn't take SDHC, and I was about to return my new sealed card before opening it. There is NOTHING in the user manual and NOTHING on Garmins web pages about SDHC.
Thanks for all the comments here making me dare opening my card package. smile
My SanDisc card works fine. It also works on my Vostro 1700 from Dell. (very, very fast smile )
