The Chit Chat Thread for the week of April 28th 2008

This is the place to talk about things that are not gps related, you can discuss whatever you would like, as long as it is clean. Remember we have families that have their children involved in the GPS fun and we don't want to make parents feel uncomfortable when their children ask what that word means.

Have fun...

This thread will be closed on Monday and a new one will be opened.

Helicopter Rides As Mentions Last Week

Ride a Helicopter?

I don't think so. I don't believe that helicopters can fly. Its all MAGIC. They don't have wings. I know “THEY” say the whirligig at the top is a wing, but who is the “THEY”. If you recall every time someone wants to convince you of something it always the PERVIRABLE “THEY” that speaks. “They Said”, “They Say”

I believe the whirligig at the top screws the helicopter up into the air.

Just my view on the subject.

Stimulus Package/Tax Rebate (a little fun with elections)

Stimulus Package/Tax Rebate

Are you having trouble understanding the upcoming tax rebate?

Let me help you - this is a great explanation of the tax rebate program recently enacted by Congress. If you don't understand how it will work maybe this explanation will help:

50,000 people went to a baseball game, but the game was rained out. A refund was then due to the ticket holders. The team was about to mail refunds when a group of Congressional Democrats stopped them and suggested that they send out the ticket refunds based on the Democrat National Committee's interpretation of fairness.

Originally the refunds were to be paid based on the price each person had paid for the tickets. Unfortunately that meant most of the refund money would be going to the ticket holders that had purchased the most expensive tickets. This, according to the DNC, is considered totally unfair. A decision was then made to pay out the refunds in this manner:

\ People in the $10 seats will get back $15. After all, they have less money to spend on tickets to begin with. Call it an 'Earned Income Ticket Credit.' Persons 'earn' it by having few skills, poor work habits, and low ambition, thus keeping them at entry-level wages.

People in the $25 seats will get back $25, because it 'seems fair.'

People in the $50 seats will get back $1, because they already make a lot of money and don't need a refund. After all, if they can afford a $50 ticket, they must not be paying enough taxes.

People in the $75 luxury box seats will each have to pay an additional $25 because it's the 'right thing to do'.

People walking past the stadium that couldn't afford to buy a ticket for the game each will get a $10 refund, even though they didn't pay anything for the tickets. They need the most help. They are either lazy or think that society owes them for just being born. Sometimes this is known as Affirmative Action.

Now do you understand? If not, contact Senators Ted Kennedy or Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama for assistance

I got sucked in by the fireworks stores once. Hmmm......... why did I do that? The darn things aren't legal where I live. You can't even have the "safe and sane" fireworks. Not even a sparkler.

The fireworks sat in my closet until I visited Montana last year and took them to my daughter's house. OMG! I was blown away by the fireworks those Montana people buy. The "fireworks show" in our town pales in comparison to the show that went on all around the little town of Belgrade. I sat in my daughter's back yard and watched an amazing display of pyrotechnics that was all done by amateurs - homeowners who simply bought cool fireworks. It was all legal and totally awesome and it went on for a long time.

Where are you spending your rebate?

This seems to be a popular news media question these days. It would seem to me that with the rising cost of gasoline, most everyone ought to answer "gasoline". To me, those who don't either don't drive vehicles or are talking left pocket vs right pocket dollars.

The price of gasoline is roughly $2.00/gal above the early 2005 price. Mid 2005 was when the price started to inflate. If the average vehicle drives 12,000 miles per year and gets 18 MPG, then the averave vehicle uses 666.7 gal/yr, or about $1333/yr over the early 2005 cost.

The US consumpton of gasoline is shown to be 388.6 million gallons per day.

http://www.eia.doe.gov/neic/quickfacts/quickoil.html

So the amount of the annual US increase is 388.6 * 365 days * $2 = $283.7 billion. How much is the tax relief package?

The above $ only considers the "gasoline" impact. The other energy components of oil would therefore add to the drain on the economy.

So, I'm just wondering what happens next year?

Anyway, food for thought..

SMARTFIX40 Road project

Major I-40 and I-75 Construction Project - For those that don't live around the East Tennessee area, or will be traveling on I-40 or I-75 in East TN.... BE AWARE!!! At midnight tonight TDOT will be CLOSING THE INTERSTATE through Knoxville. There are detours and alternate routes through the area. The small section of I-40 that goes through the middle of downtown Knoxville is being shut down for 14 months, YES 14 MONTHS!! Goto smartfix40.com for details. I live here and it's been a mess for years and finally they're going to "try" to fix it.

Those using I-40 will have to detour onto I-640 to go around downtown Knoxville. Those on I-75 can either travel to I-640 and go around, or take I-75 to I-275 near downtown and still avoid the construction.

The project is finally going to widen the interstate in that area from 2 lanes each way to 3+ lanes. and clean up, and re-do several bad exit/entrance ramps in that area.

Yea, it's going to be fun, and a nightmare till July of 2009 around here.

American Idol

After watching Paula Abdul's complete confusion on American Idol last night, I wish there was a way to vote her off the show and get some one who can make an intelligent comment instead!

In case you missed it, she was telling a contestant (Jason Castro) how she did not like his second song at all. Problem was, the contestants had only sung one song. So then she said she got confused and was reading her notes on David Cook's song. Then to move on, they asked her who her favorite was for that round and she said "Cook"! The one she said she didn't like?

The Death of Common Sense

My nephew sent this to me and I wanted to share it with you all.
---------------------------------------

    COMMON SENSE

My parents told me about Common Sense early in my life and told me I would do well to call on her when making decisions. It seems she was always around my early years but less and less as time passed by.

Today I read her obituary.

Please join me in a moment of silence in remembrance, for Common Sense had served us all so well for so many generations.

Obituary: Common Sense

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old she was since her birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. She will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing:
When to come in out of the rain,
Why the early bird gets the worm,
Life isn't always fair,
And maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies:
Don’t spend more than you earn.
And reliable parenting strategies.
Adults, not children are in charge.

Her health began to deteriorate rapidly when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place:
Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate.:
Teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch.
And a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened her condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job they themselves failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer aspirin, sun lotion or a sticky plaster to a student, but could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant, and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home, and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by her parents, Truth and Trust; her husband, Discretion; her daughter, Responsibility; and her son, Reason.

She is survived by three stepbrothers:
I Know my Rights
Someone Else is to Blame
I'm a Victim.

Not many attended her funeral because so few realized she was gone.

If you still remember her, pass this on.

If not, join the majority and do nothing.

She does seem a bit bewildered at times, and has a really difficult time saying anything negative. Maybe that's what confused her: she had to say something that was not complimentary.

Simon seemed "right on" to me, after the first round of songs, when he said something like he could hardly believe these contestants were the ones they (the judges) had chosen to compete, as now that they were trying to get into the top four, they were singing like they didn't care.

To me in the first round of songs, everyone but the two Davids were just resting on their laurels, and even the Davids were only OK.

Just got home

I just got home a while ago, been up to the Smoky Mountains, Pigeon Forge, Bryson City, Went on the GSM railroad for a train trip thru the mountains, Loved it, On my way back you would NOT believe the amount of traffic on the roads, Was on Interstate most of the way, I26 and I95, The traffic was bumper to bumper for miles and miles, even with the price of gas the way it was, I use midgrade and it was as high as 3.78 in the hills and down on the flat land it was 3.55 and the Diesel was really bad, 4.22 in some places and 4.05 in SC. We stopped in SC and filled up with gas and the tractor trailers were lined up 6 pumps deep at 4.05 a gal, but anyway the ole 650 never missed a lick, and some of the custom POI i loaded onto a s/d were great,Got several of them.
