POI category

Okay I don’t know if I’m the stupidest person in the world or what. I downloaded one POI in .csv format and imported it into the POI editor saving the file as a .mgln file. I saved it to my Magellan 4250. Looks like it works fine, it is a POI for the locations of the Hard Rock Cafes in North America. Today I created a file in .csv format then imported it into the POI Editor, I guess I could just have created in the POI editor and saved a step. Anyway I loaded it into my GPS in the same directory as the first Enhanced POI under SUR \ CPOI. Then when I went to select a POI file I selected the one I had created (list of locations of my Credit Union). Anyway only one at a time shows up under Display Categories. Am I supposed to save both in the same category?

Second I don’t remember who created the Hard Rock POI I downloaded but in the address is in two lines in the Formula Bar. I went to format cells and at general there tiny square between the street address and the city, state. How do you do this? It is driving me crazy trying to figure this out.

Thanks, Blair

This part is pretty easy. You can ignore everything but lon, lat, name because your unit can't use the extra fields anyway. What you are seeing is unique to Garmin created files. It is a split line break, that is, a LF without a CR. It allows the Garmin to display more information in a small space. Useless to the rest of us......and confusing as it is non-standard (except in Unix) to split the LF/CR like that.

As for the other part, do a search here for Magellan POI and I think you'll find the answer you need for that. If not, post back.

Thanks for the reply. After I posted my question I was playing with the POI Editor again. While doing so I found out how to add categories to my POI file. Not that difficult at all.

This is somewhat unrelated,

This is somewhat unrelated, but I found that to create a cleaner POI file, you should open the .csv file in Wordpad and search/replace the quotation-mark (") and replace it with nothing.

This will remove all the quotes from the names so that it appears more natural when shown on the GPS device.

Just a tip, first time doing this myself.

Dan thanks for the tip. I

Dan thanks for the tip. I takes me some time to clean up the fields when I import them into the POI Editor.

Something I found by accident is by clicking on several mgln files will open more than one POI Editor at a time. Makes it easy to copy and past when making files with multiple categories.
