Updating POIs on a Nuvi 660

I recently purchased a Nuvi 660, and want to know if I add new POI's onto an SD card using Garmin's POI Loader will it overwrite any of the existing POI's currently on the unit? I'm still trying to figure out how the POI's get appended. Are they simply added onto the existing ones, or are they in different files/folders? I also happened to notice the issue of sort order just posted on the forum as well. Is there a way to have all of your POI's sorted without using separate folders on the Nuvi 660?

.

The built in POIs are part of the map database.

The Custom POIs that you may load to your unit are kept in a completely separate file.

How are you trying to have your Custom POIs sorted? If you are talking about having them sorted alphabetically as that poster was, then no, you need to put them in folders if you want to control how they appear on the unit.

Updating Custom POI's on the Nuvi 660

Thanks for the feedback MM! I used your advice to another user about creating separate folders on my computer for each different type of POI category and it worked just fine. I also found out I can't put custom POI's on my SD card and have the Nuvi 660 read them from the card, which I thought could happen. You seem to be the go-to person for a lot of different GPS issues.

Thanks Again

POI'S

I have a nuvi 750 and all of my custom POI'S, music and pictures are on an SD card and the unit reads them great. Are you using the POI loader to put them on your card? You have to use the poi loader....

When you run POI Loader and select your SD card as the destination, does the installation appear to work properly? (ie Do you get the Success! xxxxx POIs were loaded screen?)

If they seem to load properly, when you start the unit, you should get a prompt that asks if you want to import the data. Respond "Yes" then you should get a prompt to "Skip this file" (or something like that) and then you won't get the prompt again.

Then the Custom POIs will be found under Where to? > Extras > Custom POIs

Are they not showing up when you touch "Custom POIs"?

Differs by model.

Ricky,

Wording to prevent the transfer of POI's from your SD card to the unit differs by model -- If your unit offers no checkbox for "Don't ask me again" on the initial prompt asking whether you want to copy the new data to the Nuvi, you must choose "Yes" (as counter-intuitive as that seems), just to pull up the second prompt that allows you to check a box saying to skip that file for transfer and future prompting. You will be given that option for each new gpi file on the SD card.

If your unit offers the "Don't ask me again" checkbox (and the 660 DOES) on the first prompt, check the box and choose "No" to the question of copying the data. You will get this prompt for each new gpi file on the SD card, but there would usually be only one.

I guess Garmin could have made it more confusing, but I'm not sure how.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

.

Now if we could just get them to add this to the Zumo firmware, then I'd be happy! : )
