Garmin Communicator, Mapquest and Google Maps

I installed and removed Communicator 4 times because the Test Page said that it wasn't detected, both in Explorer and Firefox. I deleted it and downloaded it again from Explorer and installed it. Yet, it still says that it is not detected. Garmin's typical "extensive" documentation doesn't reveal a clue as to what to do. Does anybody have any ideas.

Thanks in advance.

Did you install Activex? When you download the plugin. In the browser screen you will get message about installing the Activex add on to complete installation of the communicator plugin.Very easy to miss the message if not looking for it.Have you just tried to go to the Google maps and try it.I never ran the test.Just done the download and everything worked ok.Several others have posted doing the same thing.

Yeah, the ActiveX was the problem. When I let that run, it worked. However, it said that it had found my nuvi 200 and sent the maps, but I can't find them. I have tried Where To, Favorites, and Extras and can't find the maps. Do you have any idea where the maps are?

Thanks,

williea

Where Did They Go

That is the question. I had the same thing happen a numbeer of times still haven't found where they went. I did switch from address to business and then I got the favorit's I selected. you may try that and see if it will work.

Maps?

You are not downloading MAPs from Goggle Maps only waypoints. Thes waypoints should be in your Favorites or whatever your Garmin unit calls where you store your Favorites.

PS. they are not also POIs

H Hannah,

You're absolutely right. They WERE there. I just didn't scroll down far enough to find them. I thought that they would show up at the top of Favorites.

Thanks to you and to the others who contributed on this.

Favorites

You may already know this but favorites show in the order of closest to where you are or the city you put in Near to....You can spell if you know the name...

Thanks Bobby, I knew that,

Thanks Bobby,

I knew that, but I had forgotten it. By the way, I've noticed that when I use the "Near" function and put in the city and search the cities of the same name to find it, it wants me to enter the city and state again when I go to put in an address that I want to go to. It seems redundant.

Thanks for your response.

williea

That is true. I only use

That is true. I only use NEAR when I want to search POI's, Favorites, Etc. If you know you are inputing an address don't do the near thing...Kind of two different functions.

Garmin Communicator (No Send to GPS)

Installed Garmin Communicator. Test OK.
Bring up Google map. Set route. However, comma, dramatic pause...there is no GPS option on the "send" link.

.

You can't send routes. It only works with individual points.

Try Mapquest

Instead of using Google Maps, try Mapquest. It actually saves routes you create in Mapquest and you can download via points and routes. It does save it as a GPX instead of GDB file. I tried several routes forcing along roads I wanted using via points (just like Mapsource) and it works perfectly. If I use Google Maps, it only saves the individual via points in my favorites.

.

Just note that the nuvi 200 (which profile of the poster above me indicates) can't store routes.

Hi, garymcq.

I tried using Mapquest to save a normal route I use to go into town. When I tried it the regular directions the GPS used were in effect. It only seems to save the starting and ending points. I didn't see any way to input a via in Mapquest.

Am I doing something wrong? How do you use it?

I use the send to often from google maps and it seems to only provide the "send to" for businesses from the pop up. But recently they have added send to in the link above to the right.

But sending a route, as opposed to a way point, seems to be counter productive. Maybe not...what do I know!

There is a "Add another

There is a "Add another address button" that takes you back to the same UI that you use to find a location.

Once the route appears on the map (my route appears in blue) move your cursor over the route and you will see "click to drag" appear when you move over the route. Once that happens, left click the route and drag it to a "via point" you want the route to follow.

Hope that makes sense.............

I have been used to dragging routes with Google Maps for a long time, but it never seemed to work with Mapquest. I don't know if they changed something, or if I'm just stupid, but it works like a charm now. Another problem I had is that it just wanted to save starting and ending points. Now it seems to save it as a route. I'll have to try it out.

Thanks a lot for all the help garymcq!
