POI Icons not displaying on Nuvi 760

I just upgraded to a Nuvi 760 from a 650 and one big difference I have noticed is that the 760 will not display any of the internal POIs, only my custom POIs will display. I tried zooming in all the way while sitting in a shopping center parking lot and there was nothing displayed at all. My 650 sitting right next to it shows everything. I checked all the settings and can't find anything that would change this.

Anyone have an idea of what the issue may be?

.

Here are the things I would try.

Check the Map Detail setting and ensure that it is set to Most.

Be sure the detail maps are selected.

Be sure that you are in a 2D map mode and not 3D.

Zoom ALL THE WAY IN until you can't zoom anymore.

Be sure your firmware is updated.

Touch the map screen to switch to "browse mode" and see if they show up.

Yeah, 3D you can zoom all

Yeah, 3D you can zoom all the way in and still not see them, gotta be on 2D (just highlighting what MM said, cause I think this is probably the issue)

Yes on all of the above: Map

Yes on all of the above:

Map Detail is set to Most, in 2D, (don't care for the 3D map), zoomed in all the way, Firmware was updated first thing before ever using it.

I did notice this morning that when in browse mode they do display, but not while following a route or just driving with the map displayed. Very odd. I guess a call to Garmin is in order.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I wouldn't bother calling. Send an email. It sounds like a firmware bug.

When they updated the Zumo firmware a couple of versions ago, this happened on the Zumo too. It used to be that the built in POIs would show up when zoomed to 300 feet or closer.

Now they still show up at that zoom level, but only once you touch the map and enter "browse mode". It's definitely a bug and hasn't been fixed yet on the Zumo and that was two firmware versions ago.

c530 settings

Good to have a choice.

They give you a choice because everybody has their own preference. Me, I prefer the 3D view.

I tried them all for a few days while driving and each has it's merits. For me, 3D works best. I like how stuff at the upper part of the screen is zoomed out so I can see more area but the stuff that is closer to me - like the immediate turn - is zoomed in for more detail. And I like the perspective of distance that the 3D view gives. But that's what I liked the best. Try each view type yourself for a few days and decide what you like the best.

Firmware Rollback?

Motorcycle Mama, if it is a firmware bug, is there any way of rolling back to a previous version that may have worked?

I've been doing some web searches and can't seem to find anyone else experiencing this same issue.

I’ve taken screenshots using my 650 and 760 to show Garmin just in case they don’t believe me.

.

Yeah, you can always roll your firmware back.

For me, the Zumo firmware update actually fixed some issues so I probably won't go back as this issue is more of an annoyance than anything else most of time.

To me, since you can't see the built in POIs on the map screen unless you are zoomed to 300 feet or closer, it's virtually useless to try to see them on the screen because I'm never zoomed in that close while driving.

And if I'm going to look for the built in POIs, I'm likely going stop anyway, so I can browse the map.

I agree that it's an annoyance, and I would definitely send them an email. You can call if you want but you are likely to hear "Gee, we've never heard of anyone having that problem." and "Thanks, we will report it to the the software engineers and we are sure that they will include in in future firmware releases." But maybe the will have some additional input.

Thanks for the info and

Thanks for the info and suggestions. It's very much appreciated!

Before you download old firmware

I have both a Nuvi 660 and 750. On the 750 the poi's don't show as you mention. On the 660 I see major poi's like parks, universities, and businesses that I don't see on the 750. On the 750 if you are in 3D mode and touch the screen and zoom to 300' you will see the poi's but not in normal 3D, Track Up, or North Up.

I talked to two different Garmin tech's Bill and Andrew. Both said the 7XX series suppress POI's to reduce what they called "screen clutter". They said the 660 and 750 are definitely different in that respect. I have also seen this discussed on other forums.

It is disappointing to me that they did this on the 750. Based on the Garmin tech input and the fact that my unit and several others from other posting boards work just like yours I don't know if firmware roll back will do any good. Let me know if you try it.

Thanks for the confirmation.

Thanks for the confirmation. I can see the point of it being cleaner but I kind of liked seeing them while driving. The least they could do is give users the option to display them or not. I can't imagine that would be too difficult.

There are many features and changes in the 760 that I really like, but there are also things that they changed or removed from the 650 that I don't like. Most software adds features in new versions but still leaves old functionality available. Maybe it's a memory issue, but I shouldn't have to give up features I like when upgrading to a newer model.

760 POI's

I wholeheartedly agree with you. When I first got the 750 I considered sending it back because of the POI issue. Now that I have used it I think some of the things I have on the 750 outweigh the disadvantage of not handling the poi's like 6xx. I got the MSN receiver and the gas prices and sending poi's wirelessly to the device from MSN live maps are great as is the rest of MSN V2.

Your point about having the option is right on. I personally did not think the 660 had "screen clutter".

Reply From Garmin

Like some people have noted, this is apparently by design in the 7xx series. Here is the response from Garmin:

The engineering team has removed this feature from the 7xx series due to problems discovered in drawing time with the 7xx series. To limit the screen clutter and improve the drawing time of the maps that feature was removed.

Makes me wonder if the processor in the new series is not as powerful as in the 6xx series. That doesn't really make sense though. The 7xx series does seems to have a smoother/better resolution so maybe the performance hit of the POI icons was too much. Either way I'm still going to suggest that they add this as an option with the understanding that it may display slower when the icons are showing.

Thanks so much for this

Thanks so much for this info! I was also trying to figure out why my preinstalled POIs would not display.
