POI Editor (for Magellan 3225)

My Magellan 3225 CD did not include the POI software editor/manager. Where can I get this software?

Excel

All you really need is Excel or word pad? Not sure what format you need for a Magellen? Also do a search or I am sure in teh FAQ we something about this!

I'm pretty sure the software is not available separately. Many people have searched in vain and it doesn't seem like Magellan support has been able to help much either.

Excel or Notpad won't work for Magellan.

Isn't there any 3rd party apps that can be used?

I don't think so.

Ok, so I went searching on behalf of the OP.

I found this thread. There's a link on there that should help.

Can't vouch for it so proceed at your own risk.

Simple CSV?

So a Simple CSV will not work for Magellen??

Nope.

Neither Excel nor Wordpad opens the CSV files.

Nope. I tried to open the .poi file from the 3225 to a CSV editor with no success.

I will try to see if the software works. It is a Magellan POI editor, so it may work.

The software you suggested

The software you suggested does not accept .poi files, only .mgln and other file types.

Custom POIs on 3225

Software is NOT available to manupulate the .poi files. There just isn't. The file is a proprietary format and Magellan doesn't want you messing with it.

The software that you found may work for "custom" POI's; that is, additional user created POI files.
They must be saved in .mgln format for the unit to recognize them.

The 3225 is an odd duck. Since it did not come with the software CD, custom POIs may not work either.

POI Editor

I have a Maestro 3225 which I purchased from Costco ($149.95). It DOES have the POI editor software on the CD and the POI editor works very well. It will open .gpx, .txt. .csv and many other types of files and easily converts them to the .mgln file that you put on your GPS as an "Enhanced" POI file. The enhanced POI's can be set to alert as you approach the POI. And, like the other POI's on the 3225, they show up as an icon on the moving map screen.
I am surprised your CD does not have the POI Editor. You may want to take the whole package back and exchange for a new one. Your CD may simply be defective. Good luck.

Both these applications should have no problems opening a CSV file! You may want to check your association in your settings....

Yeah, those programs will open CSV files. But the OP still need to have the Magellan software to convert the files to the Magellan format that the unit can use.

Thanks for the tip. I

Thanks for the tip. I downloaded the POI editor but was not sure if it was of any use because it did not recognize .poi files. Now I know that the 3225 will accept .mgln files using an SD card.

Even though I live in the US, I can see that the portable GPS units only include major Canadian cities. I tried to enter the address of a friend who lives way outside of Halifax. No luck.

I will. Thanks.

I will. Thanks.

Is there a limit to the size

Is there a limit to the size of the external SD card that can be used? I have a 1 GB card, which is plenty. As you can see, I'm new to the portable GPS game.

I wish these GPS manufacturers would offer more extensive data for Canada. I donwnloaded the 6 million POIs for the US and it's great.

I got this 3225 as a gift

I got this 3225 as a gift purchased from Costco. It didn't include an A to B USB cable, but any generic cable will work. I used the A to B cable from my digital camera to upload the 6M POIs to the 3225.

I remember reading, either in the user manual or on the Magellan website, that the maximum SD card capacity that will work in the 3225 is 2G.

Also, your 3225 that came from Costco should have had a USB cable included. Mine did. Very strange!?!?

It was strange. The Costco

It was strange. The Costco packaging was not tampered with. It only contained the CD and the unit.

Also, Magellan claims that the unit will run on battery power alone for 2-3 hours while moving. My unit shuts down in less than 1/2 hr and needs to be recharged.

I noticed the screws on the back of the unit are covered by small rubber plugs and there is a screw covered by the the serial # label. I wrote to Magellan and have not heard back from them about battery replacement. The batteries are probably the same type used in other models.

3225

A "plain" SD card up to 2G should work fine.

You may have a charging problem instead of a battery problem.

Somewhere there should be a battery charge indicator telling you about how much charge is left in the battery. Find that.

If it came with an AC charger, plug that in overnight. If USB cable only, leave that plugged in and the computer turned in overnight.

It is possible that the USB cable you are using is NOT charging the unit properly.

Loading .mgln files to 3225

Another option is to load .mgln files directly to the 3225 through USB. In this instance, a SD card is not required.

No, it should have included software. If I were you, if you can take it back......

Magellan 3225 Battery life ... USB Cable

The battery life on my Magellan 3225 is easily 2-3 hours. In fact, for day-to-day travel around the city, I do not even use the 12v auto plug (I will when I take a longer trip). I just charge the GPS in my home with the 110v charger, and take it to the car, and bring it back in when I come home. I live in a hot climate, so I never leave any electronics in the car (in the interest of longevity) -- GPS, radar detector, satellite radio, all come out of the car and into a convenient camera bag, and stay in the house until I drive the car again.

Re the USB cable, I bought my 3225 at Costco, and it did NOT have a USB cable in the (hard as heck to get into) bubble pack. But I have several at home from mp3 players, which work perfectly with the GPS, so it was of no concern to me.

IMHO the Mag 3225 GPS was a great buy at a buck and a half after instant rebate. I'm very happy with it. It does what I need, has many features you normally pay a lot more for: text-to-speech, SD card slot, 110v charger included (usually only higher end units seem to have this included, and these chargers seem to cost $20-30, after-market). The screen is plenty bright in the bright Arizona sunshine, the voice is plenty loud enough, and I like the display, how it is laid out, and what information you are shown. I managed to load the 6 million POI's, and next will be the red light/speed trap file. Great bang for the buck!

Explore the CD "Drive letter:"\downloads\Setup
The editor may be there.

I have read elsewhere that the 3225 units sold at Costco earlier (circa 2007) had white cardboard packaging, had earlier firmware 1.14, and had USB cable "taped" to the outside of the package.

The later 3225 (circa 2008) had dark blue cardboard packaging, a later firmware 1.36, and had the USB cable included inside the package.

were did you find the 6 m poi file?
thanks in advance roger

poi editor and 6mil expansion

drsykotic wrote:

I have a 3225.. the POI editor is available as a download from the CD that is included. There is no need to use a SD memory card because the 3225 comes with nearly a GB of free space in its internal memory.

The CD should open a webpage in your browser that is located on the disc and in the middle of the page will be the POI editor that you just need to click to download of the CD. Once it is downloaded.. just install the small app on your computer. It will accept and convert nearly every POI file-type into the .mgln format.

I also downloaded and installed the 6-Million POI replacement for the Magellan the day after I received the device. I happened to find it using the bittorrent protocol on the internet. It's a massive expansion and it is very useful, the only downside is that searching POIs on the device takes a little longer due to the larger database (about 5x larger than factory-install).

usb cable

That might be accurate. I received my 3225 from Costco last week.. it came in a dark-blue and silver cardboard package and the USB cable was included like you said.

actually i also read that

actually i also read that while the dark blue cardboard might be indication as to the firmware version, a better way to find out is to press down on the plastic cover package and actually power up the Magellan GPS, then click the touchscreen (through the plastic cover) to get to the firmware version.

POI Editor and .MGLN files

I've just thrown up a quick page for the Editor and some files for download here: http://members.shaw.ca/cgy_guy/

I'll be glad to add more .MGLN files if people wish to add them. Hope this helps.
