What else do Redlight cameras enforce?

Okay i understand the fear of the speed enforcement camera but why such a big deal over the red light cameras? Are there that many people that running red lights that this is a worry for the average driver?

A Couple Non-Obvious Reasons

Data at many redlight cameras shows an increase in rear end collisions as people who should go on through a yellow light slam on their brakes to make sure they don't get a ticket. An unsuspecting driver behind them is caught off guard and can't stop in time. These POIs allowl you to expect the unexpected.

Also, I'd estimate that 90% of people who turn right on red don't come to a full stop before turning. A police officer might think that slowing to 1/2 mph is close enough, but a machine might not.

It Seems.......

according to what I have read there was a lot of red light runners (seen several myself), but the cameras were a deterrent, and now not that many are running them. Dallas is (according to the paper) disabling a little over a quarter of theirs. Speed Cameras? Red Light Cameras? Neither bother nor concern me. I don't do either. I do have a SD card with the RL cameras, and school zones, but I'm considering taking it out. The beep is more of a nuisance than being of help. I was just curious how they worked. Now I know.

red light camera usefulness

Stats for my area reveal a 75% decrease in accidents.

Its also a great deterrent for speeders.
Usually the locals are the ones who know the lights in their areas. They will usually speed up for the yellow lights and a lot of times run the red light. Personally, now that I know about these lights, I actually now understand that yellow means caution and not to speed up.

Not letting them get over on us

So I guess it is the thrill of knowing that technology will enable us NOT to be outsmarted.

I Forgot ..............

to add, Dallas is going to extend the length of the yellow light timing in some areas. That's a start to solving a problem.

Rear ends up, side impacts down

I just read something this weekend and dang if my short term memory won't let me remember where I read it, but that studies showed that while rear end collisions at some of these red light camera locations were up 15% after installing the cameras, much more dangerous side impacts were down 25%.

I might have been somewhere in the Boston Globe, the Boston Globe Magazine insert, or the other trashy insert they put in on Sundays (they one that is like a mini National Inquirer that is put in a lot of Sunday newspapers across the country).

Just an FYI,
