Greetings all,
We are totally new to this stuff, but thought it might help us (and now others) if we track and mark sites we find mainly in, but not restricted to Texas.
I am still to download and add my first file, as connecting my Garmin to the confuser is a scarey thing for me. I have deleted and destroyed so many things unintentionally. However that should be resolved today. Im hoping I find a way to log and then rate or discribe each POI ("haunted sites") as we visit them.
To wit, we travel, we can use stores, but we need Starbucks.
Does anyone know of any Starbucks POI files, or should we add this to our logging list.

With your C550 click "where to" then Food,Hotels.. then select "food" scroll to Cafe/Diner and believe me you will pull enough Starbucks to make Juan Valdez smile!

The closest Starbucks to me is about 40 miles North, and isn't even on the list.
There are plenty of other choices for similar, and in my opinion, better fare.

Emergency Brake? What Emergency Brake?
I have the Starbucks POI from GPS Passion and it's very extensive and accurate. (Although they do seem a little snooty about "their files" being posted elsewhere.) I don't know what the big deal is about that anyway. It's not like they're copyrighted, nor were they purchased from the owner by the web site. Also, they were posted to a "Free" website by individuals for the purpose of providing free information of their own free will (just as folks on this site have done).
I would think that it would be advantageous for people to be able to download and add or correct information to ANY free POI out there and then re-upload it anywhere they care to. I certainly expect others to do that with the files that I've posted. At the very least e-mail me with corrections or additions.
I'll upload it here for you.

rights to share files
You can only upload files if you created them yourself or if you have permission from the owners of the files to share them at the POI Factory.
We need to be careful to respect other peoples' rights to the content.

Great, thanks for the link.
I still can't believe ...
... there's a place in the U.S. that's 40 miles from a Starbucks
. In the northern suburbs of Detroit, I don't think you can get farther than about 1.5 miles from one. And I don't even LIKE Starbucks!
I'm about 25 miles from the nearest Starbucks
And I get much better coffee closer to home...

Starbucks Everywhere
That Starbucks file was the first one I uploaded to my nuvi (after removing the non-contiguous US sites). I uploaded it for my wife's benefit, I hate Starbucks coffee.
I did a test and in Seattle you will be within 1 mile of 30 Starbucks!!

I wonder why companies don't do this
I often wonder why these companies don't make these POIs as downloads available straight off their site.
As we know, Starbucks already has a full database of locations that is searchable on their website. To throw that into a POI file would be fairly trivial. It would mean that the POIs are correct and updated frequently with new store locations.
Seems to me like a no-brainer to increase sales and have better customer relations...

Makes too much sense, they can't do it.

IMO
I think that most sites don't make the files availabe becuase no one told them! I mean I can't think of a business that doesn't want people to go to their location. I think it really is a matter of no one at a high enough level being aware of what a POI file is and why people would use one.

You need to create the excel file according to the FAQ located at : http://www.poi-factory.com/garmin-csv-file-format.
Once in the proper format, save the excel file as a .csv file.

I agree with the comment
"I think that most sites don't make the files availabe becuase no one told them!"
A lot of people, including those who run businesses, don't know what they are. My guess is that in 10 years, every company will have a POI file available with their business locations, but it will happen sooner if enough people request them through the proper channels. A customer service link on the company's web page will usually get your request to the right department.

Cannot find the Starbucks POI
I have been to the http://www.gpspassion.com site and cannot find the Starbucks POI download. Can someone give me a hint where to find it?

Thanks, 2 questions
Thanks for the location. I actually tried this one previously and could not get it to work.
Questions 1: Do I load the folder to my desktop and let the POI loader access the folder?
Question 2: I have a Nuvi 660. Do I instruct the POI loader to load to the Nuvi or the SD cards?
I appreciate your assistance.
.
Take a look a the Getting Started and FAQs pages here on this site. There is detailed information regarding loading Custom POIs onto your unit.
But the basic instructions are to place all the POI files you want to load into the same folder on your PC (you can create subfolders if you want) and then direct POI Loader to that main folder.
You can load them to your unit or to your SD card. Either will work. It's your choice depending upon how much space you have and how many you are loading.
Also, I believe that the files from GPSPassion are zipped, so you will need to unzip them first and then put the file(s) into your POI folder on your PC.
Thanks
I work for Starbucks and have spoken to a few of the other Managers. We'll put the word out about doing something like this. Thanks for the idea guys.

You need a navigator to find your way around that site ! This site is so much better for poi file lists.
Anyway, here is a direct link to their poi lists so you don't have to waste time finding them.

EDIT:
Just downloaded the Starbucks file there and it overloaded by c340. I put it in Excel and edited out all but four states...left the four where I do most of my traveling.
Starbucks is also good for WiFi connection, though there is a charge. Free WiFi at Burger King !
Where ever you go...there you are.

Just dloaded the Starbucks POIs from the other site ...
Just an FYI, I heard the Bcks will be offering 2hrs free wifi with coffee purchase soon...

Starbucks POI - Even more detail needed
I work for Starbucks and have spoken to a few of the other Managers. We'll put the word out about doing something like this. Thanks for the idea guys.
I know this post is a bit dated, but if you're with Starbucks and still monitor this thread I would like to see some additional features.
We just took a road trip from northeast Texas to Orlando, FL and back and had some snags related to Starbucks. We are HUGE Starbucks fans, but this situation could just have easily played out with McDonald's and other places too. However, rather than theoretically I can say for a fact we got burned not once, but twice, specifically trying to find a Starbucks. We were reduced to having to call stores to avoid the problem related below.
We need Starbucks locations differentiated between standalone stores and those inside of malls, college campus libraries, etc. The reason? On our road trip we wasted a lot of time pulling off the Interstate and driving in circles around hospitals, shopping malls and college campuses. Some sort of way to differentiate between the type of stores (A standalone store is much easier to access during a road trip than is a college campus library.) would sure help people to properly manage their time.
