Nuvi 650 Screen washout

Hello,

I recently purchased a Nuvi 650 to replace my old Streetpilot I. Boy, things have changed a lot and these new models have quite a few improvments. One problem I am having is seeing the screen in daylight. It is fine at night, but during the day it is so faded and washed out that it is invisible until it lights up to announce a turn ahead. Once it lights up, I can see it fine for about 15 seconds or so, and then it fades out again.

I have it mounted on the windshield with the "auto" setting for day/night time.

What is the problem ???............Thanks.

The problem is (at least it

The problem is (at least it sounds like it) that you have you blacklight set to turn off in 15 seconds. Don't have my gpsr right now and can't remember the menu sequence, but there is a setting that will allow it to stay on all the time. I think that it is in the same menu screen as where you set the "day/night/auto" setting, but can't remember for sure.

My 650 doesn't do that and is set to auto Day/Night as is yours. It sounds like your unit is going into power save mode as if it were working on a low battery, are you plugged into the cigarette lighter?

Look at this

Go to the wrench>Display>backlight timeout> then see what it is set to try the "stays on".

I have my backlight set to 15 seconds. This was fine on my old streetpilot I (black and white display) and evem with the backlight "off" you could easily see the display during the day.

I have the unit set to "auto" also ( this means the "auto" switchover between daytime and nighttime modes per GPS time clock right?).

So, I need to set/change the setting to "stays-on" when used in daytime, and then change again to another setting (auto) if I use it at night? This constant changing of settings would seem like a lack of correct factory programming???

You can also change brightness

The easiest solution is to keep Display>Backlight Timeout to Stays On. Then from the menu screen select the Quick Settings icon (it looks like a speaker and a gear) and turn down the brightness to 60 or 70 percent. This is usually bright enough for the day and dim enough when it switches to night mode.

If you are running off the battery, turning down the brightness will also extend running time.

The Quick Settings icon allows for pretty easy adjustment to your taste. I also find that different mounting positions require different brightness settings in the day. Dashboard mounts are most prone to washout. I mount mine on the dash using a vent clip; that keeps it out of direct sun most of the time.
