How do you download new

How do you download new voices and cars? I am avoiding downloading the new firmware version 4.30, but if I cancel out of downloading it, then I can't get to the ndxt step of the optional downloads of the voices and vehicles.

Great, but are you bsp131?

everything is okay. I did download some of the voice updates and the Bluetooth update. Everything is working fine. I did not load the chip firmware update yet.

Hi Jim,
Did you get the 4.3 update via WebUpdater? If so, you are playing Russian Roulette. If you have any kind of glitch in the connection while doing the update that way, you can lose your maps. I'm sure you have a backup of your whole Nuvi (right?), but it is much safer to download the executable file at http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=010-00... and then run the update locally.

downloads

I am trying to download the update (4.30) by using WebUpdater.

I hear voices

I don't know that you can. My TTS voice file disappeared one day and I had to update the firmware myself to get to the voice back. One more reason we should all do a complete backup of the entire Nuvi drive.

As I mentioned above, you can, and I think you SHOULD download the executable (exe) file at the address above and then do the update locally, AFTER you have backed up the entire Nuvi drive to your computer.

Always Backup

bentbiker - I did use the WebUpdater but I always backup first. Being an old IT guy, you can never have enough backups. Thanks for the tip on WebUpdater. I had not considered the process. I assumed it would download and store on the PC hard drive and then load into the unit. That would address any network issues. At least that is how I might design it.

Various boards are filled with examples like myself who lost their map via WebUpdater. Don't know why Garmin tries to do it directly to the device when using WebUpdater.

4.10 vs. 4.30

After reading all of these posts I decided to downgrade to 4.10 so I could have POI alerts even with mp3 playing. That part of it worked, but the map updating (fixed in 4.20) was terrible afterwards.

I took a cloverleaf exit from the freeway and, although the car on screen kept turning, the map didn't update for almost a minute. I reloaded 4.30 and the map updates great. Since I use the map more than prox alerts I'll stay with 4.30.

Better Late Then Never -

nickjr & Hornbyp,
Thank you both for your responses and assistance. I have successfully downgraded to Bluetooth V2.8. It is running perfectly.
Sorry I took so long to thank you - brain quit for about a month. Thanks again.

Bluetooth

My bluetooth wouldn't work until I downloaded the updates. Everything is good now.

NUVI updates

I don't see any for the 650

Need to run WebUpdater

You must run WebUpdater to get a list of changes. Garmin don't post information about updates and downloads in the nuvi 650 section of their website.

The current firmware revision is 4.50
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=1925

Changes from version 4.40 to version 4.50:
Improve handling of the situation where overlapping map data is present on the device.
Fixed issue where fleet management interface messages can get stuck in the outbox.
Changes from version 4.30 to version 4.40:
Corrected issue with Retail Map Update compatibility

WAV Files...

I downloaded version 4.30 for my Nuvi 660, and tried it out. When I hit the school zone up the road the mp3 player changed to the next song on the list, but didn't advise me of the school zone. It was in the middle of a song when this happened. I am going back to version 4.10 so it will work again.

Make all your alert sounds .wav files, problem solved. not sure why people insist on using mp3's for there alert sounds...

.

Because MP3 files work natively with POI Loader without any additional programming.

And MP3 files are typically much smaller than a corresponding WAV file.

Also, the 660 will work with

True that...

MM, all true... If your not trying to play mp3 music wile getting alerts, then use mp3's. If you do, then make your alerts wav files, works everytime.

update

I hope I didnt just mess up big time by updating my nuvi before reading this forum. I like that I can listen to my stories on my card and still get my turn by turn directions and alerts. Will the update kill this?

How can I go back to the previous version if I did not back-up?

BTW, I'm backing up the whole garmin to my usb drive now.

As long as you use the default audio alerts, there is no problem; only custom MP3 audio alerts cause a problem.

The other option is to downgrade at http://gpsinformation.org/perry/nuvi/ . However, anytime you downgrade, there is the possibility of something going wrong. I believe, though, that somebody went back to a point where everything worked and had no problems.

I use custom alerts

Yep, I use custom alerts, guess I'll have to try the simulator again to see if it mess everything up. Thanks for your quick response.

BTW, do you know if there is a way to be notified from the forum if I get a reply to a message?

Miss POI can answer for certain, but I do not believe this software platform has that capability. I know other forum platforms do.

Maybe it is something they are looking into as a future enhancement.

There is a new module out for this feature and we are waiting until other sites report success with it. We don't like to make you guys guinea pigs when it comes to the new stuff.

We are working on some other features currently, we will keep you posted.

custom alerts and software version 4.6

It worked! I did a simulation of the redlight and my custom alert came on like is should. Now I need to trouble shoot my other custom alerts.

don't understand what the issue is all names are same as I do a name change and copy and paste then change the ext to make sure.

Understandable

I don't blame you for moving slowly. Sometimes it can be painful to be on the bleeding-edge of technology.

All you have to do is read here about some of the Garmin updated software disaster stories.

The AVS forum I follow has the option to subscribe to a thread and receive instant email notifications when someone posts to that thread. I have been using that feature there for 3 or 4 years as I recall.

It works great as long as the thread is not too active or it will drive you nuts with all the emails.

That site is using VBulletin, we use drupal which has different modules that you can use and adapt to the needs of your site.
We are not able to use VBulletin because it does not interact very well with all the other non forum aspects of the site.

The big problem is the use of custom audio alerts AND playing mp3 songs or books. When an alert triggers, the playing of a song or book is supposed to be suspended during the alert, and then pick up at the point it was suspended. However, with the latest firmware updates, the song jumps to the end or stops playing -- this is a real mess with a book.

If you don't use the mp3 player for music or books, there is no problem. If you use the mp3 player for music or books, but don't use custom audio alerts, there is, likewise, no problem. Only if you use both is there a problem.
