Nuvi 6XX Version 4.30 Available Now

Just want to let everyone know software version 4.30 just came out now. Didn't mention anything about fixing the problem of alert while playing mp3. Will try it out tomorrow anyway and report back.

Changes made from version 4.20 to 4.30:

Added support for MSN Canada
Addressed an issue of missing MSN Direct movie times
Addressed an issue in GPS Buddy where an out going message can be stuck in the message queue and never get sent
Addressed an issue with Cyclops speed camera cache

What MSN direct on the 660 & 610?

dwl, ya beat me to it on the update.

From the Garmin website, they're only listing updates for the 660 & the 610 (at least as of 0920 Eastern), neither of which have MSN capability.

Also, what's GPS Buddy and Cyclops speed camera cache?

Nuvi 650

I have a Nuvi 650. I only see updates for 610 and 660. Is the 650 a forgotten model? I hope not b/c I just got it.

Nuvi 650 Update IS Available

bsp131, I just ran WebUpdater for our 650, and the update is now available as of 09:50 EST.

Just got it, installed it, found like a TON of other updates for my 660, installed them, rebooted and all is well with the world again! WOO HOO!!

Oh and there's updates for the TTS voices as well.

Use the updater program and it will ID those that apply to your 650

I ran the update program and

I ran the update program and it showed a TON more updates for all the other TTS voices but I don't really need all those do I? I mean, I speaky dey English only. In addition, it showed an update for the bluetooth but I hesitate to do that one when the version I have now works so well. Oh and no issues here with the touch screen sensitivity, it's just as sensitive as it has always been.

If your bluetooth is working don't mess with it. If it quits, then try the update. Many folks got messed up with one of the bluetooth versions (sometimes its the phone, sometimes gps). So if it ain't broke - don't break it smile

As for languages - I have all non english removed from the unit - so don't worry about them either.
(leave them on your hard drive or back it up to a cd in case you ever want ( don't know why ) to put them back).

Doesn't work for me

I downloaded version 4.30 for my Nuvi 660, and tried it out. When I hit the school zone up the road the mp3 player changed to the next song on the list, but didn't advise me of the school zone. It was in the middle of a song when this happened. I am going back to version 4.10 so it will work again.

OK now

I rolled back to version 4.10 and just got back from checking it. Everything is working perfectly, again. When I rolled back, I lost all of my preferences, and had to go through them again to get the Nuvi back to the way I had it. This didn't happen when I went from version 4.20 back to version 4.10 but it did going from version 4.30 to 4.10.

Garmin Nuvi 660

Software version 4.20 to 4.30 updated fine.

Everything seems to be working fine, well cept' for those damn 3 lightening bolts that wont go away. Tech support for Garmin is tops, but software support is not on par with Tech support. These folks are S L O W.
It seems crazy after taking so long to get software corrected, like the latest version of WebUpLoader, that it too messed up big time. I think its been over 6 or 7 months now with the problem of the lightening bolts telling me I'm in store for a flash flood, when its actually been snowing for many months.

Hey Garmin Software Team, are you guys awake?

What did you gain with the upgrade?

So where's the beef for this precarious update? Garmin has good products; however, its software upgrades, don't speak well for a market leader. Continue on this path, it will soon become a market trailer, and then into the oblivion as customers will eventually get tired of half-baked software upgrades that render their units inoperable albeit temporarily. I guess I'll wait for awhile till all the dust settles.

The maps draw better and

The maps draw better and faster, the voices pronounce the streets better and overall it seems to be more stable and locates satellites faster. I did NOT HOWEVER update the bluetooth for my 660 because it works just fine the way it is.

Update

I am also still having trouble with the alerts while the MP3 player is playing. Can anyone tell me how to downgrade the software? Thanks

Thanks

Thanks for the update info.

does garmin make them available

Doesn't Garmin make previous releases available on their site anywhere? Since they suggest a downgrade to fix this problem, I would think that they would facilitate the process with the customer??? Nonetheless, thanks for the link!

Previous Releases Can Be Found on the Garmin Website

Yes they do, but they don't put it in a nice, neat list - at least not one I could find. That's what makes the gpsinformation.org website an easier place to get previous releases.

If you really want to get the file from Garmin's website, it takes a little work. You have to know, or be able to figure out, the exact name of the file you want. First, from their homepage, go to Support>Updates & Downloads. Click on the Additional Software button, bypassing the WebUpdater choice. Using Rick5266's example, scroll down to the Nuvi 660 and click on the link. Under the last section, Unit Software, click on the download link for Ver 4.30, even though this is not the version Rick wanted. Click on the link to accept their terms, which brings you to the actual download page.

My web browser is IE7. When I move my mouse pointer over the Download link without clicking any button, the complete URL name is displayed at the bottom-left of the IE7 window. Note the name of the file - nuvi660_430.exe. That's the current version. You then have to manually type the full URL into your web browser's address bar, changing the name of the file to the one you want. In Rick's case, he would type: http://www8.garmin.com/software/nuvi660_410.exe because he wanted release 4.10. Then, hit Enter and the file is downloaded.

In fact, if you click on the above link in my post, which is active, you will begin the download of the version 4.10 file, so be careful. sad

If I ever need an older version, I think I'll go to the gpsinformation.org website and use their list. Its easier. mrgreen

Bluetooth Downgrade -

I don't know if the Bluetooth firmware is actually on the 'perry site' - I couldn't find it.

However, V2.80 is available from here:
arrow http://www8.garmin.com/software/nuviBluetoothFirmware_280.gc...

Save it on the Nüvi, in the \RemoteSW directory as 006B055301.GCD. Since it's an earlier version than the one you have loaded, it will probably not be loaded automatically.

In this case, press and hold 'Moving Avg' on the Speedometer screen, to display one of the hidden screens. Press 'Next' until you get to the 'Bluetooth Status' screen and choose "Updt" to manually reload the firmware. (This procedure is from the Nüvi 310 - and may vary between models).

I'm getting the bug for additional features on my next GPS. Regarding the mp3 player, I guess you can download the songs from your computer. Can you play them through the vehicle's stereo? I'm thinking about a nuvi 750. What does that FM interface do?

FM Transmitter

The FM transmitter, good and bad points, have been discussed a lot on the forum.

This is probably the most recent and best one to answer all your questions about playing mp3s through your car stereo: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/8703

FM Transmitter Output Power Limited

dminz wrote:

I'm not sure that is going to happen. The output power (watts) is limited by the FCC for these kinds of devices. Until the FCC allows manufacturers to increase the output power, it probably won't get any better.

This was one of the features that really attracted me to the nuvi 660. I was very disappointed when I tried it and found out how poorly it worked.

Is It Safe...........

to download ver. 4.30 now, or is it worth even fooling with? My unit is working Ok as it is configured. I don't want to screw a good thing up. Is blue tooth, and voices the only the only major updates in it?

You don't say what ver you are running now, but BT was not an improvement addressed in 4.3. See http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=1921 for reasons to upgrade. If the fixes don't match a need, you are only asking for problems.

My Nissan Sentra has an audio input jack just below my GPS. When I listen to MP3s I just connect the nuvi headphone jack to the car input and it sounds great!

MP3

I have a 660 with different playlist downloaded from my computer, and I listen to them through my radio by just turning to a empty FM station. One problem is the station can fade in and out.

FM Transmitter

... with 4.30 ...

I never really played with FM Transmitters before my 660. I thought the 660 was good enough.

Canadian Tire had on sale last week an iPod cradle/charger/FM Transmitter for $9.99. It plugs into the cigarette lighter and the iPod sits in it. All one piece, no wires. Blows away the 660 as far as sound quality and FM power output.

No more listening to audiobooks or mp3's on the 660.

The 4.30 firmware update made no difference for me in FM power output.

You're no fun

What are you trying to download, and where? WebUpdater should be downloaded to and installed on your computer, not to the GPS.
