Garmin StreetPilot 2730

I have had my Garmin StreetPilot 2730 for over a year now. I have updated the map, added a number of POIs, added favorites, created and saved routes, etc. I have never downloaded maps from anywhere other than Garmin Mapsource. I have read that it is possible to download other maps onto it. I am just wondering what sort of maps I might want to download. Is it typically people that want topographical maps? I have seen specific maps for railroads, etc. Is that something that could be downloaded? This pages mentions that "it will transfer any Map file (.img format) to your Garmin GPS." I realize that this site is for POIs, but there are some pretty sharp folks here. I sort of want to try something like this, but I want it to be worthwhile or have at least some usefullness.

This page has Minnesota Metro railroad maps. http://www.dot.state.mn.us/ofrw/maps/MetroRRmap.pdf Would it be easy to get it in .img format to download or is it quite difficult? My county has it maps online, but I doubt that it has the same detail that the MapSource maps have. http://www.co.dakota.mn.us/NR/rdonlyres/FFEB6505-64AE-408D-8...

We can even look up specific properties, but I am still trying to find helpful applications for this. http://gis.co.dakota.mn.us/scripts/esrimap.dll?Name=webq1&Cm...

Here is an ATV map that I might like to have on my Garmin. Does anybody know how I would get this on my 2730?

.

That program will definitely work. It is a front end for the sendmap20 program which is used to send compatible maps to your unit.

Read here to find out what is involved in making your own maps.

Typically, people use these programs to create maps for areas that aren't available from other sources. But it's a lot of work.

Here are some examples.

Thank you for the reply. As I continue to look at this it does look like most of the maps are either topographical maps or trails maps/US Forest Service roads, etc. It also doesn't look as though it is nearly as popular as POIs are!
