Custom POI Audio Interferes With MP3s – I Think

So I just took my first interstate trip with my new, nuvi 660. With the tips and help I found on this great forum, I was set up before I hit the road. Custom vehicle (Lexus RX) icon installed, a bunch of MP3s loaded on a new 4GB SD card connected through a Sony cassette adapter (disappointed in the poor performance of the built-in FM transmitter) and the combined interstate rest area POI file with icon and sound alert installed.

So, I’m zipping south on I-75 in Florida, listening to the MP3s, following the audio directions, which just briefly interrupt the MP3s, as expected. Everything was working great. . . until I came to the first rest area. Knowing the rest stop was coming up, I looked at the 660 and saw the red alert in the text bar, but didn’t hear the audio alert. I did see the “REST AREA” icon displayed, so I got that installed right. Instead, the MP3 player skipped to the next song, 15-20 seconds later, the MP3 player again skipped to the next song. This behavior continued 3 or 4 times until I got out of range of the rest stop. The MP3 player had skipped ahead about 5 songs.

I went past 2 more rest areas on the trip. Each time, the same thing happened to the MP3 player. Has anyone had this problem? Is this normal? Do I have something set wrong or is this a known “bug” in the nuvi 660?

I think the audio level of the rest area alert voice is too low, which is why I couldn’t hear it over the road noise. I’ll run it through an audio editing program I have on my desktop PC when I get back home next week to check its output level. I can amplify it, if needed. What really gets me was the behavior of the MP3 player skipping songs all by itself.

I’ve double checked the naming of the POI, icon and sound files on my PC and they appear correct, right down to the capitalization:

RestAreas.bmp
RestAreas.csv
RestAreas.mp3

This is the only POI file I’ve installed. When I loaded it, I follow the recommendation and set the distance alert to 2 miles (10,560 ft.).

Any help would be appreciated.

You are correct

This has been discussed in a couple other threads. Symptoms same as yours. I have the same issue with my 660, and yet every time somebody reports it to Garmin they are told that it has never been reported before. Supposedly, earlier versions of firmware don't have the problem -- just 4.20. Are you indeed running 4.20?

As for the audio alert not being heard, I'm guessing you are correct that it is playing but the volume is just too low. If you just use the default audio, there is no problem -- evidently switching from your music mp3 to an alert mp3 is causing the player to then jump to the next track or turn off.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

Glad To Hear I'm Not Nuts

Yes, I am running software Ver 4.20
Audio Ver 1.90
GPS SW Ver 3.00
Bluetooth SW Ver 3.00

I played the RestAreas.mp3 file on my PC and it is very soft. But, I can't look into that any further until I get back on my desktop where I have the Creative audio editing software.

Thanks for confirming that I wasn't losing my mind - or ears!

firmware bug

This firmware bug was also reported here:

Missed That One

I missed that topic. The wording of the title didn't sound like my symptoms, so I didn't read on. But yeah, it sounds like the same problem. I'm not going to downgrade the firmware. I tried sending an email to Garmin support. We'll see what, if anything, I hear back.

firmware update

I've contacted them twice in the past two months about this, and I was told both times that the tech rep had never heard of this problem, but would get back to me on it. Haven't heard a word.

Garmin Support Acknowledges Problem

I contacted Garmin Support via email a couple days ago. I received this response this morning:

"Thank you for the information. This has been reported to our engineering staff. Please be patient as we are working to resolve the issue. You will be notified when a firmware update is available or you can watch the link below. Thanks again and have a great week."

Sounds like they have finally realized the problem is real.
