Waypoints

If I look at the specs for my GPSr, on the Garmin website, it states that it has 500 waypoints.
Can someone explain exactly what this really means?

.

Waypoints and Favorites are the same thing on the GPS unit.

So, this means that you can store 500 different entries under your Favorites listing on the unit.

This doesn't restrict your Custom POIs, however, as they are stored in a different place and in a different file. The number of POIs you can store is typically limited only by the amount of space you have available.

Waypoints

Thanks for the info.
Does this include "recently found entries?"

No it doesn't include the recent.

BTW, has anyone ever got close to 500 in their favorites? I use favorites as a temp storage place.

Extracting favorites to a csv or gpx file

How does one go about extracting your favorites to a csv or gpx file? Thank You in advance for the answer.

Current.gpx

Your favorites are saved in a file called Current.GPX You can load that into a GPX editor and then edit and save to a POI file. I sometimes use the "current location" feature to mark a location, then later edit that and add the address, phone number and description and save it to a POI file. I only keep fairly current stuff in my favorites.

I can't imagine why anyone would keep that many favorites. I use it for current needs. I have several different MapSource files saved with different groups of waypoints that I upload when I need them. Some are groups of friends (I have a regular Friday night poker group), some are waypoints created to force specific routes on longer (1 day or more) road trips. I delete them when I finish with them until the next time.

POI Files

Yes I got EasyGPS and I have about 250 waypoints/saved so far. I don't see anywhere where you download/transfer/copy/save to a poi/csv/excel files? Is there another GPX editor that does this? Please advise. Thanks.

but it will...

But its going to store or let alone show 50 waypoints. Because this will defeat the purpose of the POI file.

Great CSV/GPX/KML utility

US traveler, check the following threads, there is a great utility by dr5274 to convert between csv and kml/gpx formats, it is quite easy to use, I have it in my "send to" folder, so all it takes for me, is a simple right-click, sent-to POIconverter and that's it!

You can download it from dr5274's site:

But . . . gpx?

It will let you save as a gpx file, right? The manual says it does. Maybe I don't understand what you are trying to do -- I thought your original post said csv or gpx.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

gpx file

Connect you GPSr to your computer
start EasyGPS
Receive from the unit
Click "File" > "Save as" and then select the location you wish to save to and the filename you wish to use.

You have just saved a copy of your favorites to gpx.

Thanks Charley...

Good idea. I took your suggestion and loaded my Poker night addresses in favorites to MapSource, then saved them to a .gpx POI file, and loaded it through POI Loader. Much more effective way to store the info.
