Greetings....new nuvi 660 owner. have downloaded rest areas and lexus dealerships into same file on computer and poi loder to sd card in gps. my question is to clarify that this one file will contain any location files (csv or gpx) all bit maps and all mp3's. How does unit "know" to associate appropriate bit map and mp3 with location? Thanks in advance.
.
The unit will associate the BMP icons and MP3 alerts with the POI locations based on the NAMES OF THE FILES being identical other than the file extension and by you placing all the appropriate files in the same folder on your computer when you load them with POI Loader.
The unit knows where to locate each POI location based upon the latitude and longitude in the POI file for that location.
When you run POI Loader and takes all the POI, BMP, and MP3 files (that are properly named and located) in the POI folders that you specify and creates a single POI.GPI file containing a compilation of all the information. It is this POI.GPI file that the GPS unit can read as Custom POIs.

then let me be sure i understand. i have two lists...rest areas and lexus dealerships (and associated mp3 and bitmaps). they are stored on my computer at D:/gps/poi. this same file holds both sets of lists in the same file as i understood they must be. are you saying there should be 2 files in d:/gps/poi, one as d:/gps/poi/restareas and d:/gps/poi/lexusdealers?
second related question. the lexus dealership lists are sorted by state, i.e., lexus AL, lexus FL. If these files have different names as a result of the state difference, how does the bitmap and mp3 know? do i need separate bitmaps and mp3's that are state specific?
thanks
.
Ok, I think you are confusing the terms FILES and FOLDERS. The FILES are the CSV or GPX files that contain the specific POI information. This is the data. The FOLDERS are the places on your computer where the FILES are located.
If you have different FILES for AL vs FL, then you need to have an icon (and MP3) for EACH of them for which you wish to load a custom icon. And the icons would need to be named to reflect the different POI file names.
Here's my example.
You can have subfolders under your main folder, if you want. The folders will create categories. You can't have more than one level of subfolder. The files themselves will create the subcategory.
For example, it might look like this.
> My POI (Main folder)
>> IHOP (subfolder)
... IHOP.csv
... IHOP.bmp
>> National Parks (subfolder)
... National Parks.gpx
... National Monuments.gpx
... National Recreation areas.gpx
... National Parks.bmp
... National Monuments.bmp
etc.
In this example, IHOP and National Parks show up as categories and then under National Parks, the subcategories of National Parks, National Monuments, and National Recreation Areas show up.
Here are some screenshots of what it would look like.
This is a shot of the folder and files on my computer.

This is how the first level shows up on my GPS unit.

When I select the National Parks category, this is what I get.

Then if I select National Monuments, I get this.

So in your case, you might set it up like this ...
> My POI (Main folder)
>> Rest Areas (subfolder)
... Rest Areas.csv
... Rest Areas.bmp
... Rest Areas.mp3
>> Lexus Dealers (subfolder)
... Lexus AL.gpx
... Lexus FL.gpx
... Lexus AL.bmp
... Lexus FL.bmp
... Lexus AL.mp3
... Lexus FL.mp3
Followup Question
OK...with MM's help I have poi files each with their own folder within my main poi folder. they all sync pois, bitmaps and mp3's and show up on my nuvi660. i sync them manually so i can add different promixity alerts for each different type of poi file. i can see, however, that as i add more poi's that having to manually add proximity for each category is going to take some time. is there a way to associate a proximity within a file so it can be automatically updated each time poi's are synced with poi loader? sort of like having bitmaps and mp3's associated with each file? thanks!
