Problems searching for a POI by name

I have a Nuvi 200 and when I search for a POI by name it takes 5 to 6 minutes and it still doesn't find the POI that I'm looking for. It typically finds the POI that is 40+ miles away. I went to the store and using the display model of the Nuvi 200 and a display of the Nuvi 350 I searched for the same POI. The 350 found it within seconds and the 200 took minutes to come back with the wrong POI. Has anyone else had this issue? Any solutions?

My best guess

The 200 doesn't have as many preloaded poi's as the 350. It's not doing a live search, it's searching thru pre installed points of interest. If a particular place or restaurant for example isn't pre installed as a poi it won't find it and display it for you.

Can you tell me which POI

Can you tell me which POI and which city it is in? I'll run it on my 200 and see how quickly it pulls it up.

I am under the impression that the POIs are identical for all units with City Navigator NT 2008, except the Nuvi 200 which has either US or Canadian POIs but not both.

Are you looking for a Canadian POI on a US Nuvi 200 or vice versa?

I'm also under the impression that the 200 has as many pre-installed POI's for the 48 states plus Hawaii and Puerto Rico, at least with the 2008 map. If you disagree, please give us the source of your imformation.

I'v loaded the Sams club poi on my 200W and it takes forever for it to find a Sam's Club

If you loaded Sam's Club, are you searching for the one you want under "Extras > Custom POIs"? It won't be under the regular POIs.

.

To the OP, did your GPS unit have a satellite signal lock when you were searching? If not, it may be trying to search from a different location resulting in it not finding the location that is closer.

"Used" to own a Nuvi

"Used" to own a Nuvi 200..Did the same thing..hourglass spun and spun..then a 350..was somewhat better..upgraded to a 750..Just about perfect.Just remember the 200's have the "regional" maps loaded ,as the more expensive units have the "full" maps loaded..

Which POI

Hi Jambaj - The US POI I'm looking for is 'Gymboree' and I live in Fairfax, VA. I know there are at least 6-8 Gymboree stores in Fairfax, but the one it found for me was in Olney, MD. I had a locked satellite signal when I was looking for it.

Should I load more POI's?

Charles, have you found a solution? I only have the factory installed POIs at this point.

There are several references in other threads discussing how what yellow pages a company is listed in effects whether or not they are even in the POI list.

FWIW I get a Parent/Child program 18.6 mi. NE of Fairfax when I input that name.

Nothing under the proper name and my hourglass has been spinning for past 5 mins.

Update: Finally got Gymboree Play showing up but closest was 143.8 mi or more

My 350 was slow, too

Strange... Using the "Near" Fairfax VA option and searching for the text Gymboree, I did not get a single hit in VA for this. Nearest one was 143 miles away in Fort Washington, PA. This was on a Nuvi 350, and it took 3-5 minutes to complete the search.

My Zumo with the v2008 North American maps does not show any Gymboree near Fairfax which means that (for whatever reason) it's not in the database. At least no under that name.

In fact there were no Gymborees in Virginia at all. None in MapSource either.

Are you saying that a 350 at the store found the Gymboree in Fairfax?

Thanks

Yes, the 350 at the store

Yes, the 350 at the store found Gymboree in Fairfax within seconds.

.

I'm wondering if it (the 350 in the store) had the v8 maps. Maybe Gymboree was in that version and now isn't in the v2008.

I deleted the v8 maps from my MapSource, but maybe someone else can confirm this.

I tried finding Gymboree near Fairfax VA and it did not bring it up in the one minute I let it run. I then ran a search for Gymboree without specifying "near" and it still took a while - I gave up before it came up with any results.

As indicated by other posters - seems to have nothing to do with the POIs in the Nuvi 200 vs the other higher end models. It just may be the map version.

Nuvi 250W

I opened MapSource with the

I opened MapSource with the City Navigator North America V8 map, told it to find Fairfax, VA. I then told it to "Find Nearest Places" containing "Gymboree". It located 6 within 12 miles, in less than 30 seconds. (Although, for some reason, it listed each one twice.) So it appears they are in the POI list for the V8 maps. On the other hand, the Nuvi isn't finding them, even when I manually enter the street address for one, and tell the Nuvi to set my location there. So it appears they aren't in the current POI list, for whatever reason.

Curious

I was curious so I ran a test on my Nuvi 250w. With the satellites off, I set my location to Fairfax, VA. I began my search for Gymboree. It took 1:15:06 to find “Parent Child Play Program Gymboree.

I did a Google search and found one store in Fairfax and few others scattered in near by cities.

I have a 250W and the hour

I have a 250W and the hour glass just keeps spinning when I search for Sam's Club in Columbus,Oh and there are 4 and the one I go to has been there for probably 10 years or more.

Is the Nuvi loaded with any Sam's Clubs?

.

In MapSource (and on my Zumo), the only Sam's Club in Virginia listed is one in Sterling, VA. The only other hits for Sam's Club in Virginia is one named "Sams Club1 Hour Photo" (it shows up just like that) in Chesapeake and a Sam's Club(ATM) in Richmond.

The other locations that exist in the real world apparently aren't in the database. Hence the need for Custom POIs.

Wal-Mart/Sam's

My local Sam's club is listed as a Wal-Mart. I found this out when I wanted to get to the nearest Wal-Mart and ended up parking at a Sam's. I don't know, but maybe all Sam's are listed as Wal-Marts.

I had a similar problem with Costco stores in the Toronto area. Found a POI file someone had created and I was good to go...

For a list of Gymboree stores in the DC Area (MD,VA), see:
