Latest Garmin update for MSN Traffic Receiver is working great

I was not thrilled with how the MSN traffic receiver was working on my Nuvi 680. While living in a coverage area, it only locked on about 10% of the time while driving to work. I was beginning to think I had a defective receiver but others on this board expressed the same problem.

I'm happy to report after installing the latest traffic receiver update (V2.5), it's now locked on for 90%+ of the commute.

If anyone is holding back from doing the update, don't.

The update was made from the Garmin site using WebUpdater.

I have to agree. That is

I have to agree. That is one sweet upgrade! I absolutely love it!

If you haven't used the live maps to send a favorite to the unit, give it a try.

The really great thing is that you can find a business on the map with just the name and city, and have it send directly to the gps.

I'm happy it works for you

I would like to give it a try, unfortunately Garmin doesn't see the need to make MSN Version 2 available for the Nuvi 680.

I wonder if Microsoft feels the same way. Imagine what Microsoft would say if Dell or HP wouldn't allow users to upgrade their software and instead depended on people to buy a new computer.

Be patient

Be patient they are receiving many complaints. The new MSN version could be avalaible for 6xx series but i don't know exactly when ?

I am looking for more info at this time.

CBRDan, I too have the Nuvi 680 with MSN traffic receiver. When I go to webupdater, the only thing is shows besides updating languages is it also has an update for GTMxx (not MSN traffic) at the top of the list. I dont see any updates listed for the MSN v2.5 anywhere and when I check the unit, it shows (Settings, then wrench, then systems, then About I have the
following listed.

Software Version 4.20
Unit ID my serial number
Audio Version: 1.40
GPS SW Version: 3.00
Bluetooth SW Version: 3.00
GDB SW Version: N/A

where the heck is this Version 2.5 I see you all talking about? I just dont see it anywhere on my 680 and you said you have a 680 too so I need to find out where and what Software you are talking about

Thanks

You can walk a horse to water, but a pencil has to be led.

Follow these instructions..

Check the URL mid-way in this post:

The receiver software level is listed near the end of the audio files list.

The MSN receiver update and the FM receiver updates are downloaded to the GPSr as selected by you via webupdater, and uploaded (one time) as needed to the traffic reciever when it is active and connected to the GPSr. You will see the upload notification on the GPSr when it occurs.

The 680 and 7xx series accommodate either of the receivers, hence the updates for both are available.
However, some of the new MSN features are not as yet available to the 680, but they are in the MSN receiver software. I switch the MSN receiver between a 680 and 750 frequently.

Enhanced MSN for 750

Just talked to Garmin and they said "The 750 is the only product in the current line that is compatible, all you need do is run the MSN update". Might be time to buy one?

7xx series

The whole 7xx series is compatible. I use it with my 760.

I sent Garmin a letter

I sent Garmin a letter explaining that I was very upset that after spending close to a $1000.00 when I purchased my 680 and was not aware of a 7 series coming out soon that I should be penalized for my purchase of a 680 and not buying a 7 series since I was not aware of a new model.

Rayzers...If you look at the

Rayzers...If you look at the bottom of the list you posted you will see GDB SW version: N/A. If you have your MSN receiver plugged in, you will see what I saw before I updated mine...GDB SW version: 2.30, after I did the update and plugged the MSN receiver back into the gps unit, it did the install and then showed the SW version as 2.50. On my unit anyway, the SW version always shows up as N/A unless the MSN receiver is plugged in to the 680.

Nuvi 680

So does that support ver 2.5 (based on your note above?)

This is the link for the 2.50 SW version and MSN site which tells you there is an update out for the 680, hope it helps

MSN Receiver only

The reference is for the MSN receiver update. I have not seen any update for the 680 implementing the newer features as yet.

Here is the supported device feature list posted on Live Maps. Note the feature differences between the 7xx and the 680.

Msn Receiver only

I thought that was what we talking about here. It did speed up my acquisition time and help me lock on to a weak signal here where I live. I am on the fringe of Nashville's broadcast. I never said we were getting the additional features of the new MSN receiver version that will be coming out on the Newer NUVI's.

I just today (2-4-08) saw your post and yes, you
are right, the only time you see the GDB SW version would be when the MSN receiver is powered up. It did upload an update a while back in the car, but it got locked up at 48% complete. I couldn't even turn off the GPS , so I had to unplug the MSN cord and when I tried again, it worked fine. I now have
Version 2.5 and everything seems to be working fine.

Thanks for your input....

Don't forget that this is MICROSOFT software so crashes are normal!

MSN works with the 680, I think the MSN cable comes with it. BUT it is only Version 1, not the new Version 2.
