Can you use a Zip Code for where to address on Garmin 660

Has anyone been able to enter a zip code as a "where to" address on the Nuvi 660?

Zip Code

I don't have a 660, but I believe (with a few minor exceptions) the user interface is the same for all Nuvi models. There is nowhere in that interface to input a zip code.

Whoops - I stand corrected...... Page 10 of the user manual says you can put in the "postal code" instead of a city (when it asks for the city). I assume you would simply switch to numbers, and input the 5 digits. The manual does indicate that not all citys in the map base have cross reference to zip codes, which means it would be hit and miss, and is probably restricted to the 5 digit code and not the 9 digit code.

Geocode the zip

You'd probably have better luck using an on-line geocoding utility and getting approximate coordinates for the address and/or zip code - you can find one at http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert?form=address and use the 'quick geocoder' at the top of the page for a single address.

Can you use a Zip Code for where to address on Garmin 660

Yes the manual says that but I cannot get that to work for any state yet. As soon as I put in the first number for CITY it immediately switches screens to one that says "Search All Cities". Then no matter what you do if doesn't seem to know to search on ZipCode.

postal zip code search

The nuvi 660 and c550 supposedly can search by using zip codes. However, as stated in the "Tip" on page 10 for the 660 and page 7 for the 550; TIP: You can search for a postal code. Enter the postal code instead of the city name. (Not all map data provides postal code searching.)

I haven't been able to do a successful search using a zip code with my 550. I'll try a couple from each state and see what happens.

postal code

Postal code search works for Canada.

You can find some postal codes (search for businesses etc) and try it. Don't use any spaces when entering the postal code or it won't work.
I don't see an advantage to using this type search since you need the postal code and also the street number.
Maybe it'll be useful for our Canadian friends.

postal code search

The only map area that supports postal code searches at this time is Canada.
If anyone has the "City Navigator NT North America v8"
(That a lot of us here have requested from Garmin)
It says it right on the front of the dvd cover "postal code support for Canada".

If you want to try one for Canada, do this:
"Where to"-->"address"-->"spell state/Province" then start to spell Manitoba, it should come up after pressing the n then select Manitoba --> press "spell city/Postal Code" enter R3L2V1 it should come up on a line by itself, verify the entry then press it. Then on the enter House number screen --> enter 433 after pressing "done" what you should see is 433 River Ave, Winnipeg, MB R3L
It happens to be Goodies Bake Shop & Gelati. Near the intersection of Osborne St and River Av.
Like I mentioned earlier, not sure how useful this would be. Anything about an address I can't remember is the number.

Should be simple enough to find a database containing the centroids of zip codes and then to publish them as POI files.

cool

I'm glad I found this site.Lots of useful info!

it would save a lot of time

it would save a lot of time if u can just put in a zip...

another thing is that i'm from LA, and there are many suburb cities. sometimes i can't remember which city it's at, and pick the neighboring city instead. if only the nuvi can figure that out too...

I just uploaded a csv for

I just uploaded a csv for the zip codes in Florida. I obtained the data file of the zip codes from the Census office as a .dbf download. I was going to upload all of them for the US until I discovered that there were over 44,000 of them. Far more than my C340 could handle. I can easily break them out by state for anyone who wants them. Please post here with your desired state and I will extract your state from the master file.

It's good to hear I wasn't

It's good to hear I wasn't the only one who couldn't get the zip code to work for US.

You weren't the only one

I could find no way to input zip codes as a destination with my C340. Creating custom POIs from Census data was the only solution I could come up with. I never really have a need to use the zip code POIs but I am sure there must be a practical use for them. Does anyone have a practical application for them?

Also, don't forget to let me know if you need them for your state.

The c5xx series latest update seems to have fixed postal code searching used in GB, Canada has it, the US can't be far behind

Changes made from version 5.30 to 5.40:

I suppose depending on the situation it could be. If you know exactly the zip you need, if you were looking up a business for example from the web or phonebook or somewhere that had the zip listed the zip would be faster.
If you were on a trip going from here to there and knew that somewhere was in between you probably don't know the zip for somewhere and would have to spell it anyway.

Thanks a bunch for the time to get those zip codes, however, it seems that when I enter a zip code, that it really doesn't confine my search for that code. It still says, "Search all cities".

only took a second to get the zips for Richmond.

The search by zip is only available in certain areas.

Canada and Great Britain.
The US maps do not contain the data required for zip code searches (that's according to Garmin Support)

Read my post way above, and try some addresses from Canada to see how it works.

.

The US map data in City Navigator does not contain searchable zip code information.

You cannot search by zip code. This is not something that can be corrected with a firmware update.

Hopefuly the next version of

Hopefuly the next version of maps will have it if we all bug garmin about it enough.

.

The data comes from Navteq (currently) so if you are going to bug someone, you might want to start with them.

Searching by ZIP codes

I don't have a Nuvi, I have a StreetPilot C530 that I bought last June (2007) and I successfully use ZIP code searches all the time. I never even realized that there's an issue with it. I will admit that searching by ZIP code doesn't work 100% of the time, but it certainly works most of the time. See my post from last December at
www.poi-factory.com/node/8498.

Can you post a screenshot of where you input the zip code on the GPS unit?

Searching by ZIP codes

I don't know how to do a screen capture, but's here's what I do:

This address is from earlier in the thread in the December post that I cited:

I would like to add my friend's address:
1856 LaFevre Road
Geneva, OH 44041

On my C530 I do this:
Where to? > Address > Ohio > Spell City > 123 > 44041 > Done > Search All Cities > 1856 > Done > Lafe > Lafevre Rd > Go!

Like I said, I wasn't aware that there's controversy whether the ZIP code function does or doesn't work.

--
"No misfortune is so bad that whining about it won't make it worse."

.

Well, unfortunately, you aren't really searching by the zip code by that method as evidenced by the fact that it is giving you the "Search All Cities" prompt because it doesn't understand the numbers that you entered for the city.

I'm not trying to argue. I'm just trying to explain how the data works.

Easier Way

When you do that you are searching all cities within Ohio. The entering of the zip code has no effect.

Try: Where to? > Address > Ohio > Search All > 1856 > Done > Lafe > Lafevre Rd > Go!

Your results will be the same, with fewer steps.
