Will this USB cable fry my nuvi?

I have an original Garmin USB to Mini cable for connecting to the PC. It puts the nuvi in mass storage mode, and I use it for loading POIs and the WebUpdater.

I have a couple of USB to Mini cables that appear the same as Garmin's but are for some other devices. The big noticable difference is the 'filter' or cylinder is missing from these cables.

Does anyone know if the 'filter' is necessary and if using a cable without it will fry little nuvi?

A simple (minded) suggestion....

I have what some might think of as a simple (minded) suggestion. How about using your nuvi cable as the one you use for other USB mini charging/transfer things as well? So far it has worked for me as the standard transfer/charge cable for everything I have hooked it to.

But remember - "Your mileage may vary." So, if your expensive PDA/phone/camera/MP3 player/raisin peeler blows a gasket, don't come crying to me.

Cheers,

It works for me

I have a Motorola cell phone, an Ipaq, a NUVI, a Holux mini GPS as well as a few others that use the mini USB type charger. I interchange all of the chargers, never had a problem. I believe it's all 5V on a standard pin arrangement.

The U in USB stands for Universal

Yes, they are all intechangeable. That's what the U stands for - "Universal". The only difference you will ever see is that some devices respect the storage mode status pin and some do not. That does not affect the charging, however.

R E S P E C T ! ! !

I say that we should ALL respect the Storage Mode Status Pin!

I've never understood those "filters", but any cable that has the right plugs works a-ok

Universal Cable

I just have one cable attached to my computer to which I hook an MP3 player, camera, GPS, and an MP4 video player. Seems to work the same for all of them.

The filter...

Also known as a ferrite bead. Its purpose is to reduce or eliminate emitted radio frequency crud.

Should not cause any problems with your (or my) GPS.
