Mapsource

Does the 760 unit come with Mapsource? If so, I get a message saying "Mapsource could not find any Mapsource products installed"

MapSource

You will have to call Garmin and request the MapSource CD. I e-mailed them and was told it would cost an additional $15. Several posts on here have stated that calling Garmin netted them the free CD. That is the route I am going to take.

MapSource is a software program that comes on disk. It does not come with the 760, but as indicated above, you can call Garmin and get it. (probably for free. at most for $15)

The "MapSource" that you can download from Garmin's website is an update to the program which won't work until you install the full program on your computer.

A phone call worked for me

Hi all,

My email request generated a 'you must buy it' response. I called Garmin and they are sending me the disk free.

However, I was able to get MapSource working from the update download from Garmin. I downloaded a free map of Bermuda from someone. Can't find the link right now. The download was an .exe which installed the map and allowed the MapSource update program to run without having the disk. I do not have the Garmin maps, but they are on the way.

Thanks, Rob.

I have gone to their site but cannot find where they are located. Do you know the link?

Here is the downloads page

Mapsource is listed twice. One for legacy Windows 98, Windows Me and Windows NT and the other for Windows 98, Windows Me, and Windows NT. # Works with Windows Vista.

http://www8.garmin.com/support/mappingsw.jsp

Strange that none list XP as an OS until you get deeper into it. http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209

Edit: This is an update to a pre-installed version.

Update Versions

I've been at this part of the site before and when reading the install saw it was for an update not the actual original. Am I missing something here or do you need to get Garmin to send the original install disks to you first? My unit came pre-loaded so I have no disks and no way of placing Mapsource on my PC.

Mapsource

I have also called Garmin and the very nice and polite lady that answered my call will send me a free copy of Mapsource. The request was processed in about 2 minutes. Impressive !

You can make it work

I downloaded MapSource from Garmin without having any disk or any other MapSource products installed. I received the ??no products installed...?? message when I tried to run MapSource.

I went here:

http://rwsmaps.griffel.se

downloaded and installed the Bermuda map. This allowed MapSource to see an installed product. MapSource runs fine, however, the only map I have is Bermuda.

But where

did you download Mapsource from Garmin?
Do you have a URL?

Yes, I downloaded from Garmin

I did this about a week ago. I am almost positive it was MapSource 6.13.6 from here:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/mappingsw.jsp

When I downloaded it, I do remember reading something that stated it would not work without an installed MapSource product, and as stated above, I did receive the "no product installed" error. That is where the Bermuda map install comes into play.

I will verify when I get home.

Thanks, Rob.

Free Software

Thanks. I guess I will try calling them I have heard some people get lucky and others are told no way. Hope I'm one of the lucky.

Email

I emailed support with my request and about 5 days later I got an email back saying that the CD was in the mail. Since I was registered on My Garmin, I didn't even have to send my address... efficient!!! smile

Awaiting my delivery

I am in the wait and see mode. Being in Canada it might take a while for the dog sleds to get my package to my Igloo. wink

On Backorder

I called and when MapSource becomes available, Garmin is sending the CD for free.

I told them I wanted to do route planning for an upcoming trip and understood I needed some extra software. Play dumb and be very nice.

Well I think I called about the 10th and nothing yet. I will give them until the end of the week and then call again. Maybe all that snow we're getting is slowing things down.

I just...

I just said I needed MapSource to plan and create waypoints and POI's. Which is in fact exactly the truth. grin

Garmin's MapSource Policy

I sent an email request to Garmin tech support requesting the MapSource software. It was denied. They said I needed to pay $15 to get the software.

The next day I sent another email request for the software and it was denied by a different support person. They said I needed to pay $15 to get the software.

On the third day I called tech support and had no problem getting the software sent to me at no cost.

I don't understand this. Garmin needs to define a policy for distributing the software and stick to it. Everyone should pay the $15 or no one should pay!

MapSource Maps on DVD

I did that too to become familiar with the product before my DVD came but you really need the detailed maps that come with the DVD (with the same maps as on your GPS) to use MapSource for trip planning purposes. The basemap that comes with just the MapSource software itself only has major roads.

It's Here!

So my DVD of City Navigator showed up yesterday. I haven't had a chance to even load it yet. A couple of things I am curious about.

My 670 came preloaded with the European maps as well but I only recieved a DVD that indicated North American. Will I need to call them again about the European street maps?
and secondly,
What's with the packaging. One DVD in a box 8"x11"x6"high?? Talk about over kill.

.

The update for the Europe maps isn't scheduled to be released until February or March, so if you want to update those maps, you likely (based upon the date your purchased your GPS unit) will have to purchase the update.

I bought in September

I bought in September a Nuvi 670 and received the updated 2008 map after I spoke to a rep on the phone. After reading the post about the Europe map being available in February or March I am inclined to try for that update, I wonder what the cutoff date would be?

.

Typically, you would be eligible for a free update if you purchased your GPS unit AFTER the map update is released (and if it came with the old maps). Sometimes, for the North America maps, Garmin has given the free update if you purchased your unit within 30 days before the update was released. So, good luck.

Download training works

I have been waiting since january for mine in the post apparently.
But why wait when you can download the training then mapsource.

Thanks for the tip grin

.

Just be aware that the version you download won't have the detail maps.
