How do GPS mfrs compile their POI databases?

Does anyone know how the manufacturers of GPS units compile their built-in POIs? My Garmin nuvi, for example, has 6 million POIs loaded into it. How does a company compile -- and update -- such a massive database?

Anyone here who has created a POI file knows how much work is involved in putting together a few hundred or a few thousand clean POIs. But _millions_ of them? How on earth can an organization do that?

TIA for any insight you can shed on this topic or where I can research it further.

.

Since Garmin gets the data from Navteq, my assumption is that Navteq maintains the data. I also assume that their data collection methods are proprietary, so we'll never really know how they go about collecting and maintaining the data.

However, it's probably safe to assume that they use a variety of methods. Government records, phone directories, business directories, user reports, and probably lots of others.

Perhaps Navtec...

has someone jumping from POI site to POI site snagging user created POI's and piling them all together! wink

Emergency Brake? What Emergency Brake?

Makes you wonder

I have wondered how they get this information and how they keep it updated. Besides seeing some locations that are no longer there (and seeing recently opened locations) I wonder about it. Some of it scares me, like a few of the motels that are listed.
