POI Question

I just made my first POI file and would like to know how to get it to alert me when I'm close, something like the red light camera alert. Am I missing something?

Manual

Use Garmin's POILoader and select manual mode when you are loading it, and you should be able to put in the distance to you POI and it will then alert you as you approach.

.

If you run POI Loader in Manual Mode instead of Express Mode, you can select whatever alert you want for your POI file.

Alternately, you can include special keywords (like redlight, speed, camera) in the filename which will create alerts.

Or you can include a number in the filename which will be interpreted as speed data when the file is loaded.

Or you can include a number in the POI Location's name in the file itself.

You can find lots more details in the Alerts section of the POI Loader help file.

It's worth noting that the alerts work as an "along the road" alert and not as a radius alerts. Thus you must be on the road on which the POI Location is located, traveling in the direction of the POI, and the POI must be near to the road, in order for the alerts to function.

alerts to poi's

Moto Mom...so if ive created a custom poi,and want to add an alert to it..its all done in the poi loader? Or can I do it when i create it in notepad? I just picked retiredtech brain on this but havent received his e mail yet.I made a custom poi, made a mp3 file alert, put them in the same folder named exactly the same with respective file extensions, drove by the place and no alert...i guess i need the secret on how to alert now.lol

.

Here are the details from the POI Loader Help File.

----
If a file name contains a valid speed number or if all records in a file have speed encoded in the name, then all records in the file will include speed and proximity alerts. For example, a data file with the file name "Speed_30" generates speed alerts of 30 mph (or kph, depending on the type of units selected in POI Loader) for each POI in the file.

If the file name contains "redlight", POI Loader assumes all records in the file have proximity alerts with a distance of 400m/0.25 miles.

If a file contains "GATSO," "mobile," "SPECS," "safety," "speed," or "camera," but does not have a speed, POI Loader uses a default alert speed of 0, which means you will always be alerted. You can override this default value by entering the speed in Manual mode.

You can also enter speeds for each POI individually by adding the @ symbol and a number after the name of the POI. For example, a Custom POI named "Ridgeview@25" would create a POI named "Ridgeview" with a 25 mph speed alert.

For example,
-94.79731,38.81099,Ridgeview@25

POI Loader calculates proximity alert distance based on speed. You can enter proximity alert distance for individual Custom POIs in a .gpx file. You can also enter proximity alert distance for all Custom POIs in a data file using Manual mode.

Thanks again, it was the POI

Thanks again, it was the POI loader.

Selecting Manual mode instead of Express mode lets you set a speed limit or alert distance for the whole file. Just use POILoader again and when you see the option, change it from Express to Manual. All the POI's will sound the alert at the same distance. If you want the various GPI's to sound at different distances you will have to use a .gpx file instead of a .csv file. .gpx is more complicated because you have to find a gpx editor, but then there is a lot more flexibility when working with gpx files instead.

ok i guess i'm old fashioned

ok i guess i'm old fashioned and wanted to do everything in notepad before saving as a .csv file..so create the poi, load it with poi loader, but use MANUAL mode..set the alerts there..ok i'll try it..thanx for the help..

.

You could set it with a zero speed in the file name or location.

However, I think it's more simple to set a Proximity Alert using POI Loader in Manual Mode, then you can specify the distance at which you want to be alerted rather than allowing it to be calculated for you. Also, you can easily change the distance by reloading the file.

Thank you everyone! That poi

Thank you everyone! That poi loader in manual mode is WAY too cool. Can't wait to try it out tomorrow..

POI alerts

I have the walmart poi with alets and icon, but some work and some don't when I pass the two that are just of the highway I get the alert. but the big one that is off the higway with about four different ways to enter the parking lot don't alert me. I think it might be the way the lat/log were set in the file. I am going to see where it shows upon google earth. I have the same problem with a school that is one block from the street I use everyday. I can get an alert if I tell the 660 to take me to the school.
