Is 2GB Enough for Saving Garmin POI's?

After playing with the POI loader for a short while I'm now wondering how much of an issue is the SD card size. Specifically, will my 2 GB card hold all of the POI's maintained on this site and converted by the Garmin POI loader? I'm sure that I could play with this a while and figure out the answer to my question, but I'm guessing that someone else has already done this exercise..

2GB IS MORE THAN ENOUGH AND THEN SOME...

I also have a 2G SD card and have put about all the POI's I would want on it and it only has used a few megabytes. So in conclusion you have more room then you will ever need. You can always check your availble space by going to my computer , highlighting your SD card (removable device) and right clicking on it. Then choose properties and you will see what you have used and what is availble.

You will have more than Enough

2GB's should keep you going for a long, long time..

It is for me.

I'd be selective and avoid POI that really aren't interesting. Do you really need the location of every Chinese restaurant in North America?

Does anyone know what the

Does anyone know what the maximum size would be for a SD card?

I don't know if somebody

I don't know if somebody loaded all the POI listed here in their GPSr. Most of the time you only load what you need.

Also the POI here may not be 100% accurate because most of them use some software to give them the LONG/LAT using the address. For me I'm not comfortable this that process.

I assume your garmin has the preinstalled POI. I assume it use the same software to locate them.

Even thought you downloaded the POI here you have to plan your trip and make sure you can get to where you want to go.

Initially I thought these custom POIs should be more accruate than the pre-installed POI but definitely not. You still have to verify the POI you are using.

2gb

for garmin 350 i think the max that you can use is 2GB.

4GB cards work....

I have read reports of users with 4GB's cards work fine with the Nuvi's...

I think even if you use the 4gb SD card you may have problem loading it on the internal memory.

4GB card confirmed working

I have a Nuvi 680 and a 4GB card holding MP3's, all of which are working just fine.

Point Right On

(To Petrasek)..I agree. In fact, on a previous post I had suggested that a POI location sort first, followed by a categorization sort section second might be helpful for those of us who only want to pick up POI's for specific locations that were of interest to them. (... instead of paging through each section to find the POI's of interest.) Perhaps this might be more helpful down the road whne the number of POI files on this site icreases.

4gb slower

I did some experimenting awhile ago...documented here: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/6706

very interesting experiments... how about the difference SD vs SDHC cards? I wonder if they would make any diffence?

Nüvi 650

I have 738,798 points

I have 738,798 points that are taking 54MB on my Nuvi. Look at the size of your /Garmin/poi/poi.gpi file.

Doing some simple math ...
(54MB / 738,798 points) == 1MB per 13681.4 points
and multiply by 2048 so
2Gig of memory is roughly 28,019,598 points!

Wow over 28 Million points! I don't think you will run out of space with a 2ig card. The real issue would be can the Nuvi handle that many points?

Ah, but that's only 76 bytes per POI. What happens if each POI has an attached JPG, a custom ICON, an MP3 alert file and a 5000 character description? wink

Out of curiosity, what's the Nüvi running like with that many POIs loaded. A while back I tried an experiment with 1,000,000+ loaded on my Nüvi 310 - it still worked, but you could feel their presence in the response times. I suppose it might depend on the geographical density of the POIs...

Searching custom POIs is

Searching custom POIs is noticeably slower, but not bad enough to make me remove POIs. Other than searching I don't notice any response / refresh issues.

I don't use .bmp or mp3 files with my POIs. They are just wasting valuable resources on my Nuvi.

But having a large Topo supplemental map does make my Nuvi redraw much slower even if the map is not selected.

Another View

My 750 is using 1.5GB for everything Garmin supplies which includes their maps, POIs, etc. With 0.5GB left I won't run out of memory for POIs.

So my main reason for getting a card is that 2GB now costs $10. And perhaps I will want to load pictures and the like.

I use three 4 Gig SDHC cards

I use three 4 Gig SDHC cards exclusively for music on my 750. One card has music that I like, one has music that my wife likes, and the third has music that we both can live with.

All of my POI's are loaded on the internal memory, so they are consistently there, regardless of which card is being used at any given time.

All of the 4 Gig SD cards are completely full and all seem to work just fine. A major thing to watch for with these large cards is the limitation on the number of files that can be placed in the root directory. Place the music files in a sub-directory (I use one called MP3) and all is well.
