Garmin C510 No mapping data

I am a fairly new user of Automobile GPS devices and have come across a problem where the screen message says 'No detailed maps found that support routing. The Streetpilot cannot be used without them'. The last action I carried out prior to this message was to download V6 software as prompted by Garmin WebUpdater.
I have tried the reset button and also screen press+power button for 30 seconds to reset the unit but to no avail. Any Ideas guys?

No detailed maps...

You need to recreate the GMAPPROM.UNL file in the \Garmin directory on the C510. This file should contain the 25 digit map unlock code (without the dashes), that you'll find on the Yellow sheet that came with the unit.

Use Notepad to create the file.

No Detailed Maps

Hi Phil

Thanks for the solution.
Do I need to write anything else into this file or is it just the unlock code?

Cheers

Tony

Changing Maps

Hi Phil

It's OK. I just created the file with unlock code and (fingers crossed) all is well.
On another note. I have a Nuvi 660FM with full european mapping. Can I use these maps on the C510 since both units are bona fide purchases from Garmin and are for family use only?

Cheers

Tony

.

You can't use the maps from one unit to the other.

They are locked to a single unit.

Possibly

It depends on the version. M.M. is correct in that Garmin seem to have moved to a policy of one unlock code per purchase - however, this is not retrospective. So...if your "City Navigator Europe NT" is version 9 or earlier, you should be able to generate a second unlock at the Garmin website. (It can take some finding...start at http://my.garmin.com).

I've done this myself - my C510 came with "UK & Ireland V9" and my Nüvi 310 with "UK & Ireland V8". Initially, I generated a second code for the Nüvi and copied the GMAPPROM.IMG across (along with the all important GMAPPROM.UNL!) and this worked. After a while, I registered the Nüvi and the website informed me that I qualified for a free upgrade. When the DVD finally arrived and I registered it, it was for the whole of Europe, not just "UK & Ireland". So I then generated an unlock the other way round (ie for the Streetpilot).

Actually loading the maps was quite entertaining, because neither unit has enough internal memory to accomodate the whole mapset. I used Mapsource to generate a GMAPSUPP.IMG file on an SD card, which contained everything from the DVD except "UK & Ireland" (I didn't like the idea of an overlap). So, when the SD card is in either unit, I have mapping for the whole of Europe and with it out, just "UK & Ireland".
Incidentally, the City Navigator Europe V9 DVD contains a selection of ready-built GMAPPROM.IMG files for the different regions, which could you could just copy over - but then you would not have access to the Region 7 (UK/Ireland) mapping at the same time.

You might have to have a play!

Note: City Navigator Europe NT V2008 is 'out and about'. It's being shipped on new units and it's on the Garmin website (priced in dollars, for shipment to the US only!?!). I will bet that you only get a single unlock with that version.

Hmmm ... thanks for the info, Phil. So, it might, in fact, be possible.
