POI as the "crow flies"

Why are the POI's always listed as the "Crow flies"? Is there any way to change this? I need Natural Gas for my vehicle and it told me it was 3 miles away when it is actually 10 driving miles away.

Flying crow

On my Garmin C530 the directory of my Favorites shows the flying crow distances in ascending order. If I choose one of the favorites and press "Go", the trip is calculated and the subsequent screen has the estimated arrival time at my destination displayed in the lower left corner. If I press the Arrival display, the trip information screen is displayed. The upper right corner of that screen has the driving distance displayed.

To have all POIs being

To have all POIs being calculated on the fly at all times from where the the unit is would be an impractical, if not near impossible, calculation feat.

Nuvi 650 (SW 4.30; GPS SW 3.00) , GPSmap 60CSx (SW 3.50; GPS SW 3.00), GPS III Plus

Why?

I don't see why that would be impractical? The actual distance they are off seems impractical. I either hit go or add 33% to the distance displayed as a rule of thumb, just my method.

A route for every POI

Because it would have to calculate the route for every POI listed. It may not be an issue in a few more years when processor speed and battery power are more advanced. If it were practical by today's standards, I think one of the many competitive brands would add it as an option.

.

Plus when the POIs are shown on the list, the unit hasn't taken into consideration your routing preferences and avoidances. It doesn't do that until you select a single location and hit Go!.

It takes a fairly good amount of processor power and time to calculate the route, so doing that for all the locations on the list at the same time in order to show it in the list view could potentially take a long time.

POI as the "crow flies

If you requested a route to Natural Gas, your GPS might assume you have a method of travel that can follow the crows path.
