Lost Satellites

If you lost the satellites for a period of time, the GPS will calculate the distance traveled with less time logged resulting in a greater number of miles per hour.

Lost signal
Some times a Garmin loses its signal and then finds it again....it then figures you went faster than you were really going.
For the Most part the speed is Very accurate.
