Garmin 660 - Currency converter

Just got Garmin 660 and testing all features. When attempted to do currency conversion the program would misreport the currency values.ie Euro to Dollars conversions currency rate correctbut when went to currency converter the rate was increased by approximatly 34%. This was consistent with all currency. Called Garmin and the technical assistant stated that this seems to be systemic and engineers working on fix for some time in unannounced future. Any others with this experience?????

Yep -- 650 too. Good

Yep -- 650 too. Good thing the exchange rate is so bad for USD and I won't be using the converter for a while smile

Thanks for the report.

Nuvi 660

I had also bought a Nuvi 660 from Costco.CA with the same problem. Along with the currency converter not working properly my FM TX had a very week output. The remainder of unit worked well.

I exchanged it for a another new one and this one is working fine. I also called Garmin with negative results

Nuvi 350 - Currency Converter

So, does anyone know just when these guys are going to fix this? I tried to contact them by email with no luck and the phone is a joke. I would like to use it when I go to Europe in April.

Hint: Call early I called

Hint: Call early

I called exactly at 8:58am (I think they opened at 9) and I got through. Another time, I had to wait for 45 minutes

update

Does the currency update feature work in anyones unit?

Quick Fix

PaulATL wrote:

I contacted Garmin and they still don't know when this will be fixed.

This seems to work on a nuvi 350:
1 euro currently is 1.59 us dollars, to make the conversion work until Garmin fixes it, you must update the currency to reflect:

1 USD = 2.31 EUR
1 EUR = 0.433 USD

Conversion Factor

So, since the currency converter is wrong in nuvi 350 (not letting you update with the CORRECT exchange rate), I went through and calculated the conversion factors to reflect the current exchange rate(5/21/08). If you go to "Currency Converter" and update the "USD" in each of the following country's to the number in parentheses it should reflect the correct (as of 5/21/08) currency exchange rate.

Example, for 1 Euro, go to EUR Europe, euro, and click update. Enter 1 EUR = (0.433) in the USD and click save and the screen should display 1 EUR = 1.59 USD and the converter will now calculate.

Unit (conversion factor) exchange rate
Euro (0.433) 1.59
Hungary Forint (0.00172) 0.006
Canada (0.271) 0.994
Czech Koruny (0.0172) 0.063
Denmark Krone (0.0571) 0.213
Norway Krone (0.0543) 0.200
Mexico Peso (0.0258) 0.095
Poland Zlotych (0.127) 0.465
Russia Ruble (0.116) 0.043
Slovakia Kuruny (0.0134) 0.049
Sweden Krona (0.0463) 0.169
Switzerland Franc(0.271) 0.991
UK Pound (1.85) 1.98
Australia Dollar (0.257) 0.943
Estonia Krooni (0.028) 0.102
Iceland Kronur (0.0136) 0.013

This may help if you are traveling soon. I only converted Europe, Mexico and Canada.

(These numbers will change "if" and "when" Garmin fixes the glitch)

5/21/08 conversion factor

I think you have a typo in the date. Wouldn't want somebody on 5/22 to think this was current.

Edit: Paul, I'm sorry I meant not to reply directly to your post so that you could edit and then got distracted.

Seems to work OK on my 370, except it kicks $1.59 up to $1.6 i.e. So if I want $1.59 I put in $1.58 and bingo I have USD $1.59 and when converted to Euro it comes out to be 0.629 which seems close to me.
Except for that little glitch all seem well.

For some reason, I am not able to edit that post? It only gives me the option to reply or quote? But the post I wrote above it allows me to?

OK, I just under stood what you meant. Since you quoted me I can't change it.

Once someone make a posting after your post, you are not able to edit your original post.

Correct. If I had copied all the text in the comment window before hitting the submit button, gone to the OP and used the "Add New Comment" button and pasted the saved text as I intended to do when I first decided to post, it would have preserved your ability to edit. I realized right away and that is why I added my edit/apology to my post.

Garmin Nuvi 350 Currency Conversion

Your post dates scare me; my currency converter worked perfectly when I got my nuvi 350, January 2008; today I downloaded updates from Garmin and guess what-my currency will not update; I tried 1 Euro = $1.25 and after dozens of attempts, could not get it to hold; they told me they knew about it and had no idea when it will be fixed. But now that I see your problem was back in December, I have no hope they will ever fix it.

Hello

I recently updated to the new Maps 2011 along with the new software update. I tried to currency conversion for the first time this week while vacationing at Lake George and the currency conversion does not work.

I am not sure what unit you have, but if yours does not have anyway to update the data (MSN, nuLink) then you have to update the exchange rate info manually.

Then, it's close to what it was at when you bought the unit.

There is no auto-update, AFAIK.

I've never needed the currency converter.... at the same time I was using my 660.

As a point of reference.... Could someone post a couple samples of a correct currency conversions, along with samples of the same tests using their 660 -- or other model, so we all can test the same thing?

Cash Rate and Nominal Rate for Conversions

There is always a difference between the posted exchange rate (called the Nominal Rate) and the rate that is used by banks and credit card companies (called the Cash Rate). Right now, the Nominal Rate for Canadian currency is $0.96 US. But a purchase I made with a credit card on Friday showed a Cash Rate of $0.925 US.

Unless you are a LARGE money trader, expect to pay 3 - 4 cents per dollar no matter which way you convert!

Garmin's answer......

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

Because the currency exchange rates are always changing, Garmin does not always have current information for the currency converter application. There is an option to update this information in the device so that you can have accurate currency rates.

First you will need to find a website that has the most up-to-date currency exchange rates. For example, I visited the website copied below and have found that the most current rates are:

http://www.xe.com/ucc/

1 USD = 0.682116 EUR
1 EUR = 1.46593 USD

Then to update this information on your Nuvi, follow these steps below.

1. Click on Travel Kit and select Currency Converter 2. Click on "Update" at the bottom of the screen 3. Change the exchange fields with the correct information from your currency exchange source (website, newspaper, etc.) 4. Then click "Save"

This information will be stored in the unit until you change it again.

With Best Regards,

Chris G.
