POI directory structure for transfer

Hi there,

I'm a new member and also new to the world of GPS. I'm a bit confused by the POI loader program (Garmin) as the documentation is a little light in explaining the directory structure so everythings shows up correctly.

Now i do understand POI's need to be downloaded to a computer, then the loader program run and the directory with the POI (and BMP, optional but nice!) picked. The loader will then upload all CSV and BMP files in the path to the GPS unit.

My question is if you have a main directory labeled "Custom POI", then 6 additional individual directories called "Tim Hortons", "Walmart"..etc, will this be transfered to the GPS in a similar fashion and under the POI icon you would have a sub ICON of "Custom POI"...which brances off into 6 additional sub ICONS? Or are they all rolled up under the one main heading "Custom POI" ??.

If they are not rolled up, is the one level beyond the original "Custom POI" the maximum branching that should be maintained? I'm just interested in how POI files should be grouped for transfer so that i keep everything organized.

Thanks for your help and in welcoming me to this site.

.

Welcome. And yes, if you create folders under your main POI folder, the folders will become categories. You can't have more than one level of subfolder, however.

Here's an example.

You can't have more than one level of subfolder. The files themselves will create the subcategory.

For example, it might look like this.

> My POI (Main folder)
>> IHOP (subfolder)
... IHOP.csv
... IHOP.bmp
>> National Parks (subfolder)
... National Parks.gpx
... National Monuments.gpx
... National Recreation areas.gpx
... National Parks.bmp
... National Monuments.bmp
etc.

In this example, IHOP and National Parks show up as categories and then under National Parks, the subcategories of National Parks, National Monuments, and National Recreation Areas show up.

Here are some screenshots of what it would look like.

This is a shot of the folder and files on my computer.

This is how the first level shows up on my Zumo.

When I select the National Parks category, this is what I get.

Then if I select National Monuments, I get this.

Been there, done that...

I tried and put the .csv in a separate sub directory, and it seemed to work fine. I could see them in the list. I tap on Stores and would see Walmarts and such, but when I tapped on it, the 660 froze. sad Oh well, so I just stick them all in one folder and upload it. Not a big deal to me anyway. Since if I go somewhere I know what I want, so I just click Spell and use that.

Thank you Motorcycle & Oditius

Thank you Motorcycle Mama & Oditius!

Was thinking it would transfer in that manner, when i unwrap the gift from the kids for which i'll be all surprised (heehee!), i'll be excited to get things working just right.

Looks like you have a fair bit of POI's added! I'm looking forward to geocoding some of my favourite things and sharing those as well. I started with the Garmin 250W for now, but by next year i'll be wanting the text to speach model if i get a fair bit of use out of it.

Thanks for all the help!

thanks Motorcycle Mama, the

thanks Motorcycle Mama, the first time I try it, folder-subfolder, it didn't work, but your explanation was so clear, this time it work the first shot, thanks again ... grin

I don't think that will work.

That is what I did with my 660, but when I tapped on the final bar to get directions, the 660 froze ever-time. No fail, I managed to duplicate it several times. Actually I couldn't use any POI in the Custom POI selection. It would freeze every-time I tried. Maybe this is just another difference between the Zumo and the Nuvi?

create folders under your main POI folder

Motorcycle Mama that is one of the best ways I have seen on any forum about making poi files especially the examples on your computer. You should put this on the FAQ.If I had seen this when I started in SEPT my headaches would have been less trying to figure it all out.

Oditius, maybe there was an error in one of your POI files. I don't know ... just a stab in the dark. Perhaps try loading a subset of the files you loaded and see if you still experience the problem. I don't recall any other 660 users having that problem.

Yep...

O.k. I found the problem. A misguided file. I accidentally had stuck in there. So I created the subfolders and seperated the files in each. I tried it in simulation and it worked. Thanks.

Corrupted file?

Oditius...do you mean a corrupted or erroneous file?

The program should only upload csv or BMP files to the directory and skip all others in the source directory, with this i think you came accross a corrupted or erroneous file.

erroneous file

My test.csv some how got put in the directories. That file is what I use to start to create the POI's I submit. (It contains a written formula that I use to combine several cells into one. I just paste the info off the business webpage onto the test.csv. But that leaves then address, city, state and phone number on separate lines. My 660 will only read the first 4 cells. So I use the formula to combine it into one) I removed that file and reloaded it. Simulated a few routes and it seems to work fine.
