For those who want to extract just one state out of a complete US POI file, I have been using a neato free utility, that I discovered several years ago. It is called WINGREP, (short for Windows Grep). Grep is an old UNIX command line utility that stands for (G)lobal (R)egular (E)xpression (P)rint. Rest assured, it is a Windows app. Go to http://www.wingrep.com and download it, and you can search for any string/expression in any POI file. Once found, highlight the found entries, and create a POI filew from them.
POI Verifier
Among many other features, POI Verifier will extract POI entries by state by just entering the state abbreviation. It's available at:

er - it's not free ... it's $30 !!

Windows Grep is distributed as Shareware. It is not free or public domain. This means you may copy and distribute it freely but should you find it useful and use it beyond an initial evaluation period of 30 days you are both legally and morally obliged to pay the license fee.

There is one that is free
Just FYI....
There is a Perl adaptation for Windows that is free. I had a crash recently and had to re-format my hard drive... and lost it.
When I get time, I will put it back on my system.
Perl is a bit complicated, but if you are intrigued with programming a little bit... then it is very useful.
