Found this in the NY Times: Gary Burrell and Min Kao putting their first names together to form Garmin. The link:

I was working at Allied-Signal at the time (in sister division) when the decision was made not to peruse the market. Just think, as a retiree, I could be getting an employees discount.

Nüvi comes from the
Nüvi comes from the combination of new and navigation. "Newvigation" got shortened to Nüvi. A Garmin tech told me that.
