Garmin MapSource Unlock???

Hi Everyone, I am a GPS newbie who just bought a Garmin 650. I have some questions about "Unlock" with which garmin.com confused me. Please advise me. Thanks a lot.

What is "MapSource Unlock" about?
What is "Unlock Code", and what can I do with it?
When it shows that my Garmin unit is unlocked, what does this mean?

unlock code

It is a code that you use to unlock maps when you use maps on your computer. mapsource is the main map that you use to plan a trip or make custom poi's and download it into you unit. But you need the (cd) city navigator which will need to be unlocked using the code on your yellow card that came with your unit.

ditto!

Also, you can hook the 650 to your pc after installing the MapSource and you'll have the option for the system to automatically gather the unlock code from the gps -> no need for the yellow sheet.
That's how I did it for my 660.
OR: if you did register the 650 on Garmin's website, there is another option to unlock the MapSource by connecting the pc to your account.

Unlock MapSource

So, do you mean if I need to make my custom POI's, I need to BUY the City Navigator CD from Garmin, unlock it on my PC, add custom POI's, then download the map to my Garmin unit?
Then, will the customized City Navigator be additional to my base map? When I search for a POI, will Garmin search both the base map and the additional map?

Does Garmin let customers to download City Navigator from its web site, or we have to order the CD or SD card?

Appreciate your advice.

You have to request the DVD

You have to request the DVD and Garmin will snail mail it to you.

The only way to do it is to get the MapSource disk from Garmin (because there is NO way to download it) / install it / pair it with your unit / update it / enjoy it.
So, first step first -> get w/Garmin and request the disk, everything is downhill afterwards.

MapSource Unlock

Okay, I'm in the same boat as Gar-min, I'm new to the navigation system thing. I'm not sure where to go to request the MapSource DVD. I've tried the "contact support" link at Garmin.com, but it doesn't seem to do anything. Is that where you got your MapSource.
And will they just give me a copy of it if I ask? I'm sure this has been asked a hundred times somewhere - sorry.

Well I have been trying for a week now to get a Mapsource DVD (or a CD) from Garmin to use with my newly purchased Nuvi 660. So far no luck of them sending me Mapsource at all.

my garmin

register an account under the "my garmin" tab

then when you use the "email product support" your unit info, ser #, software version as well as your name and address etc will be included.

You can reach them via email using techsupp (@) garmin . com or productsupport (@) garmin . com
It's easier in the long run if you go the long route via the web site. I just tried it and it's working fine.

Help needed on Mapsource Unlock code

Hello,

Here is the description of my problem:
1.I have got the MapSource DVD from Garmin. Successfully installed the SW on PC. Also upgraded the SW to latest & greatest from web site.
2.I had already registerd my nuvi750 with Garmin. So the "mygarmin" wed link displays my 25 digit unlock code.
3.I connect the garmin nuvi 750 to my Laptop. The Mapsource finds the device successfully. I click on
Transfer->Receive from device. check the MAPS option, I get an error message : "The Selected Device has no Maps on it".
4.I called up Garmin-tech support, they say that device with preloaded maps cannot be transferred and I have to buy Maps for $140.
Is there a solution to the above issue where I can I transfer the Maps from my DEVICE to PC. Create my own WAYPOINTS and then transfer back to device.

Try Just Transferring your Favorites

When I installed the program, it automatically installed the maps onto my PC. Are you sure you don't already have your map installed?

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

.

Whoa!!! Slow down.

You can't transfer MAPS from the unit into MapSource. If you have the full version DVD, then your MapSource should already have the maps in it. You can't get them from the unit into MapSource.

You do not want to transfer MAPS back and forth between your GPS unit and MapSource unless you purchase ADDITIONAL map regions beyond those that came preloaded on the unit. The unit and MapSource already have the maps.

If you want to transfer Favorites between the unit and MapSource, just select that option. There's no need to transfer the maps. And doing so can cause problems.
