I have found that if I have my Nuvi 750 off and locked when I connect it to the pc that when I eject it it loads up and runs while still powered by the usb. Any other sequence seems to shut the nuvi down and when I turn it on it reconnects to the pc and thus can't be used while powered by the usb.
Now, the real question. When I connect it to my phone charger (usb) it thinks it is being connected to a pc and goes into sync mode. Is there any button/switch combination that will keep it from going into this mode so that I can use it while powering it with that charger (thus avoiding buying a gaimin ac adapter).
If it is a motorola adapter, I am sure that there is some logic (I know that there is on usb on a computer) in it to not just power it, but let the intended device know that it is a valid charger. Here is my thinking about the above.....
When I first got my razor, it wouldn't charge via the usb ports of my computer. It said, "Invalid Charger" or something to that effect. It wasn't until I loaded the drivers did it work.
Also, it seems that the Nuvi goes into sync mode when you place the charger on the side port, vs the cradle.
Yup, it is Motorola, and I had to do the same driver thing with my Razor.
So, you're saying that if I plug that charger into the cradle (is there a usb port on there?) that it might work? That would be perfect for my intended use of the usb charger.
On my 350 (may be different with the 750) I have a usb port on the back of the cradle.
I'll have to look. Probably there and I just didn't notice.
Pin 4 of the USB carries a voltage that tells the Nuvi to go into sync mode. Unfortunately, many of the generic or non-Garmin chargers have the same voltage at pin 4. So using the side port of the Nuvi will put it into sync mode even with many car and wall chargers. The Nuvi cradle does not carry pin 4 from the jack on the back of the cradle into the Nuvi. So whatever you plug into the back jack on the 350 cradle will just put it into charge mode, no matter how the charger is wired.
Cool, thanks. What I wanted to use the charger for is train travel, where I have a 110 outlet but no cig lighter.
No USB connector on the back of the 750 cradle, and no luck finding a sequence that would allow me to use my mototola charger on the Nuvi without going to sync mode.
Went to Fry's today and bought a generic Nuvi AC adaptor made by Gilsson for $15. Much better than the $35 they were asking for the brand name. Of course when the day come that I am travelling overseas and don't have the adaptors that come with the Garmin one I may think differently.
