How many years have you had a GPSr?

I am relatively new to the GPS world and was wondering who has had a GPSr the longest (doesn't have to be the same one). Also, how many have you gone through since the first one.

I bought mine about 1 year ago. First it was the SP c530 and now the Nüvi.

By the way Jon, can we have the ability to cast polls in the new edition of the site???

EDIT: Actually, I just looked at the calendar and I got my first one about 8 mnths ago, not a year

Val - Nuvi 785t and Streetpilot C340

Got first GPSr in 1998

First unit was a GPS III Plus in 1998, followed by a GPSMAP 60CS, a GPSMAP 168 Sounder, a StreetPilot 2610 and a Nüvi 750. I don't use the handhelds much anymore, but I won't travel without the Nüvi.

I picked up a GPS III+ in

I picked up a GPS III+ in 1998. I thought I was so cool connecting it to a digital camera to imprint coordinates on the image. Spent another $40 to buy cables to connect it to an iPAQ to use with ESRI's ArcPad.

I then got a CF model to use with my iPAQ....don't recall the manufacturer though....

Just recently bought a Nuvi 260. I have connections through a Garmin employee who can purchase it for a pretty cheap price for me.

How long have I owned my Nuvi?

I bought mine in October 2007. I'm relatively new to this also.

Longevity

My first GPS that I purchased was a Garmin eTrex Legend about 6 yrs ago. I use this portable unit for hiking and bicycling. I upgraded to my Nuvi 350 about 2 yrs ago. This is my general purpose unit. I also am currently using a Dash Express for work. I love the real time traffic and two way connectivity.

I started out with a DeLorme

I started out with a DeLorme USB GPS for my laptop about 5 years ago. I purchased my Garmin c340 about a year ago.

A year and a half

I am not overly impressed by my NUVI 350. If I had to do it over again I would definitely go for a lower price off brand unit. All I want is navigation without all the extra bells and whistles.

Since 1980!

It wasn't actually mine but in 1980 I used a Motorola ManPack GPS unit. There were only 4 satellites up then and the military was testing it. I recall it took quite a while (10 minutes?) to get a position. It was pretty heavy and you wore it as a backpack.

I think it has been a little over a year. My first the Streetpilot c550 and now I have one built into my 2009 Camry Hybrid but I still love the interface on my Garmin a lot better. I use my Garmin now in the second car.

first gps

My first gps unit was a pocket pc. Toshiba e335 had to buy ostia map to go with it I used it four 3 years bought several other dedicated gps but you hat to carry a good map to find your way. Sent two of them back Then got a garmin nuvi 680 and now would not own any other gps. But I did make a mistake and bought my wife a navigon 7100 and we use it as a paper weight. an expensive lesson Now she has a garmin 200 and she uses it all the time she has travel over 6 states and never worries about getting lost.

I guess I am a late comer, I

I guess I am a late comer, I have only had a gps for about 5 years, beginning with the 2620 but I have become a fireball, changing and upgrading about every 6 months during that 5 years. My old Gpsr's collection is beginning to look like my old cell phone collection.

My first GPS was a Magellan

My first GPS was a Magellan Roadmate 700. A birthday gifts from my beautiful wife in July of 2005.

Now, I have a 680. Good to have but not indispensable. The maps are flawed and the OS logic is cranky.

Only 6 months

and loving every minute of it

I've only had my First GPS

I've only had my First GPS device for about a month now. I've been 'playing' with it to see how accurate the mapping is. I've found that it has several wrong locations, some that are several miles off of what it should be.

With those in mind, my own "internal" GPS can usually do better. Often I will go somewhere that I don't have a clue to where I'm going and I end up within a couple of hundred yards of the location.

Spatial intuition, I suppose!!!

2005

I travel quite a bit and my kids pitched in and got me my first gpsr in 2005. It was a Tom Tom and way too expensive but it was the best birthday gift I ever received. I now have a Nuvi750 and love it but it will never be as good as my first gpsr.

When the doc tells you its bad for you, its probably very tasty.

About 5 years

The 1st one I have was the Navman ST, tested with iGuidance 1.1 & 2.1, Belkins and Pharos with the Compaq iPAQ 3865 PDA.

The 2nd one was the iGuidance 2.1 and 3.0 on my HP iPAQ H2210 PDA with Holux Compact Flash GPS receiver. The PDA was made of 'cheese'.

The third one is the iGuidance 3.1 and TomTom6 on my Dell Axim X50v and the Holux GPS receiver. I use the X50v most of the time with TomTom6.

The 4th was the Teletype World Navigator 3100 which was a disaster with its own software. Test use it less than 3 times with disaster results. Then I bought the 5th, the Mio C310x. Hacked the Teletype 3100 to load with TomTom6. When a friend 800 miles away visited me last Christmas, I gave it to her. The C310x is a back up in my car.

Recently, I bought the 6th, the Magellan Maestro 3140 at buy.com refurbished and I am overwhelmed with those features, TTS, POI update, AAA (updated to 2008 August data), bluetooth though the map is a little bit outdated, might get the map updated soon. Before I bought the 3140, I tested my friend's Garmin, I was unable to put in some New York addresses such as Fresh Meadows, Elmhurst, Queens etc. and also there is no zip code input! I know I will never buy any Garmin until they come out with zip code address input or make it simple to input New York city addresses like iGuidance or zip code input like TomTom. The X50v is now my back up and the C310x is my second backup.

hm...

When did the Garmin i5 came out?

First one

Got my first one back in 2001. It was a Magellan... can't recall the model right now, but I still have it... and it still works for hiking in the woods. Funny, it didn't have turn by turn navigation; however, it did show streets even though it couldn't tell you how to go... unless you followed a direct bearing to your destination.

First GPS?

Began surveying with huge Trimble backpack GPSs in 1995. You usually had six hour windows for good satelite signals, and had to wait for 6 minutes in one place to get a good location.

Bought my first personal GPS; a bulky Garmin Streetpilot in 1999. Have had several since then...

Currently using a Garmin nuvi 660 in the car, and a Garmin 196 in the airplane.
