GPS devices on government vehicles nail workers loafing

ISLIP, N.Y. — GPS tracking devices installed on government-issue vehicles are helping communities around the country reduce waste and abuse, in part by catching employees shopping, working out at the gym or otherwise loafing while on the clock.

Gooberment employees

I thought that is what government employees were paid to do, waste tax payer money.

Let me guess to install all the GPS devices to watch employee waste it only cost $89 million dollars?

MIL-spec GPS units

Well, the government always requires mil-spec products, so it was only $16,388 per GPS. You know, about the cost of two toilet seats.

Fraud, Waste, and Abuse

Fraud, waste, and abuse were big issues when I was in the service. I retired from the USN in 1990. My complaint then, and now, is that they don't practice what they preach. Politicans are the ones that should be reported for fraud, waste, and abuse. Any comments?

Maybe the government should check out some Black Friday Sales next week!

Waste

Got a family member in the gov. He is an agent. I don't know about the waste for sure, but I can say the perks are only a marvel.

I say Mark Twain didn't go for enough...
First thing we do is kill all the lawyers..
Next thing we do is kill all politicians.

I vote it's time for a Boston Tea Party again. Redlight cameras are taxation without representation.
Politicians only look out for themselves. Their only purpose is to get re-elected or have enough money to buy their way in... look at Kennedy.

I am beginning to think our government is a joke. Sad to say that, but I am beginning to wonder if it's not true.

oops... you don't think I got pegged now as being a terrorist because I spoke openly do you?
(....looks around cautiously...with knees shaking...)
ouchie douchie!

Government employees being tracked

I found the article interesting as I worked for the Suffolk County Health Dept. for 34 years and my food establishment inspection territory included the township of Islip. When I became a supervisor, employee abuse of official cars and inappropriate activites while on duty was an issue for me.

I think this is a form of invasion of privacy but I also believe employees should be doing their jobs and not shopping on company time. I don't see a problem with them using their lunch hours and coffee breaks for personal activities. One cannot expect an employee to work on their lunch hours.

If the employees were shopping on company time, I believe then that tracking is OK to stop the unapproved activities of the employee. However, there should be a chance for the employee to make restitution and have a second chance. My two cents!

If every employee is given the rules when hired...

And they understand those rules, then I'm not one for any "second chances". We are all big boys and girls and if you accept an employer's paycheck, you should do what they ask of you to run their business, even if it's the government. Using the "companys" time or material for unauthorized personal use is technically theft.

I have always told my kids that we live in a great democracy, but for two places . . . home and work. That's where we must do as we are asked as long as we are there.

I think you are right about home and work. But I would add one more... church.
No place, no way, no how do I find that people can do what they want in the church.

yet, they do.

Kids rebel against parents. Workers rebel against the company and people rebel against God.

Let's face it, we live in a rebellious world.
